Casa de la Guerra was the former home of José de la Guerra y Noriega. With close to 13 rooms, the expansive house was rightfully termed as casa grande as it seemed to be the biggest house amidst other structures of the locale. Today, this place is a functional historic museum, and the building is a part of the California Historical Landmark and the National Register of Historic Places.

MoreWe were very pleased with our visit. We had a great docent - Susan. The home and gardens are beautiful. We visited lotus land a few years ago - both planted a century ago. The Steedman family has a very interesting history and the tour is interwoven with many topics to think about later - engineering, iron and silver working, counter-reformation Spain, moorish architecture, diabetes, WWI munitions, … a 90 minute tour was far too brief.
MoreCasa de La Guerra is one of the less visited gems of Santa Barbara. Unlike the Presidio, which is mostly a reconstruction, Casa de la Guerra stands as it was built in 1819! Its quiet, shaded courtyard is usually empty and quiet, even though it is just paces from busy State St. Its the perfect place to stop, sit, and contemplate the long and varied history of California. The building and setting is beautiful!
