Located in Fairmount Park, the place is regarded as one of the best playgrounds in Philadelphia. Spread over 6.5 acres (2.63 hectares), the playground welcomes over 1,000 kids every day. Featuring several activities that are conducive for physiological, behavioral and social development of the children, Smith Memorial Playground provides several opportunities for creative, unstructured play. The place also includes an adorable playhouse that caters to kids younger than 5 years of age. Often sought for private events such as birthday parties, Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse is a true local gem.

My car was broken into and my car ransacked in broad daylight at the Smith Memorial Playground. Really Philadelphia! A kid's playground. It was super busy with people everywhere, WOW

Went with 2 grandchildren (ages 3 and 6). Entry is only through main building (suggested donation $5 / family) and outdoor area is accessed through basement. Basement is small and nice for ages 3 and below but area was somewhat dingy and didn't seem very clean. We went on a cold but pretty sunny day and wanted to be outside. We were there for 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon and the kids loved every minute. The playground was not very crowded and they have 3 sections to separate any crowds they may get. (Other reviews have many details about these sections and you can read them so I won't repeat.) The best activity was a burlap bag indoor slide. My kids went up and down about 20 times! There is an attendant at the top to ensure safety. He was one of the 4 or 5 attendants we saw that day. Aside from the basement that we needed to transverse to get outside, we did not look at the other floors in the building. (Note- they have signs indicating you can picnic on the front lawn.)

Smith playground is a great place for children. You can go there for fun or have an event. It's well built for children to play around as well as adults who want to throw an event for a fundraiser or birthday party.

What a great place for toddlers and young kids! It looks like an old mansion that was repurposed to be an indoor/outdoor playground for kids. Indoor: the lesser option of the two. I'm not sure how clean and well-kept the toys are. They looked rather dirty to me. There's also the basement, which has a concrete floor and a track for kids to ride various tricycles and scooters. My guess is that most of the riders were donated, so they vary in terms of condition. There was a birthday party going on inside in one section and on the porch, so it looks like it's a pretty popular venue for kids birthday parties. Outdoor: LOVED IT! If it weren't for the lack of cleanliness of the indoor toys, I'd have given Smith an excellent rating. The first thing you'll notice is the numerous playgrounds, each with a different variety of apparatuses. There are three different sets of swings, see saws, trains, slides, and more. The best attraction, though, is the giant wooden slide. You have to pick up a potato sack (there are plenty of them), carry it and walk up the ramp, and then you and your children can go down the slide. It gets a little crowded and some parents let their kids go by themselves. Of course, the kids don't know that they're supposed to wait their turn, so watch out for little people trying to squeeze in front of you. Overall, a great place to spend the day. It's free, but there's a suggested $5 donation (per family). There was about 1/2 dozen staff, but I wished they were a little more diligent enforcing the you are responsible for your children policy.

I found this playground in the Philly Phlash Bus brochure, and I'm so happy I did. Playground outside is nothing like the ones we have in Florida. I enjoyed interacting on the equipment with my then 4 year old son. Inside was a restored 2 story plus a real basement with fun race track, full of areas to play and explore. The wooden interior had this very old feel, made me daydream about 50 or more years ago what the families looked like that played there. Don't miss out on this one of a kind experience.
