We saw it from distance as it's on hilly part of Boston Common. Since it was built in 1877 it honours soldiers and sailors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who died in the Civil War. On one of the panels I read the name of the sculptor of this monument - Martin Milmore. When I searched on internet to have more information about this memorial I found that there is hidden figure of Edgar Allan Poe but I didn't find where. Next to this memorial is on display huge mine the types of which were used in WWI in the North sea. Also we found near-by a plaque commemorating nurses of armed services.

It's a column with a commemorative statue on the Common. Important to honor those who served in various wars. Stands alone and you will definitely see it while you stroll in the park.

This is a must see if your around the commons or gardens. It’s a wonderful memorial. Sucks how people will sit all over when others want to take a picture.

Boston Commons is Boston Publics Gardens less attractive neighbor, that being said, this monument is one of the best things to see within the Commons. It is centrally located in the park up on the hill so it has some nice views of the park and city from the base. Worth a visit and a few photos.

This tall monument is surrounded by equally tall trees, obscuring the structure itself. To see the figure at the top, you have to step back but then the trees get in the way.
