Walking through Boston Public Garden we came across the ten feet tall bronze Statue of Charles Sumner holding papers in his left hand on an eight-foot granite base. This statue was created by sculpture Thomas Ball in his Florence work shop Italy, and then sent to be cast in Paris at the Barbedienne foundry. Upon completion it was sent to Boston for its dedication on Dec 23rd 1878. Charles Sumner was an academic Lawyer, and leader in the antislavery movement during the civil war. He was a United States Senator and leader of the radical republicans, criticizing Abraham Lincoln for being too soft on the south, a calling Ulysses S. Grant a corrupt despot. TIP: This is one of many statues in the gardens, do not lose any sleep if you miss it.
