The Stone Street Historic District is a small enclave that once formed an integral part of Old New York. This small area that encompasses William, Stone and Pearl Streets is almost as old as the city itself. Stone St. is named after the cobblestones embedded into the ground and it was first used by the Dutch in the 1600s. In the next century, the British and finally Americans gained control, then The Great Fire of 1835 destroyed much of the area and it subsequently fell into disrepair. However in the 20th Century, the city and local alliances have revived its historical character. On William St., there are some fine examples of Neo-Dutch buildings and some great places to eat like Luke's Lobster Roll and the Dubliner. During the summer, Stone Street fills up with bars and the locale is also a favorite place to shoot films and television.
