US Custom House

The U.S. Customs Service is the oldest federal agency and though this Beaux Arts masterpiece created by architect Cass Gilbert in 1907 no longer conducts any formal maritime transactions, it still remains as one of the more stately buildings in Battery Park. Today, the building houses the National Museum of the American Indian and the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The customs house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and former Sen. Daniel Moynihan sponsored a bill that gave it the name of the nation's first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton in 1990.

Fort Jay

Fort Jay in Governor's Island is a part of National Historic Landmark District and has been a coastal naval base in the past. It has a star shaped construction and is situated within the boundaries of Governor's Island National Monument. This historic building has undergone numerous re-modelling  and while it is no longer a Coast Guard base, it played a significant part in history through the years 1794 to 1966.
