We found this bronze sculpture of Horace Greeley by artist John Quincy Adams Ward in the City Hall Park. Greeley was the founder and editor of New York Tribune newspapers which became the highest-circulating newspaper in the country through weekly editions sent by mail. Among many other issues, he urged the settlement of the American Old West, seeing it as a land of opportunity for the young and the unemployed. Greeley popularized the slogan Go West, young man, and grow up with the country. He endlessly promoted radical reforms such as socialism, vegetarianism, agrarianism, feminism, and temperance and hired the best talent that he could find. I found that originally the statue was standing outside the New York Tribune Building but was moved to City Hall Park in 1916.At the foot of a statue of Horace Greeley, inside the fence is Joseph Pulitizer plaque. Pulitzer was a newspaper publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the New York World. He became a leading national figure in the Democratic Party and was elected congressman from New York. He crusaded against big business and corruption and helped keep the Statue of Liberty in New York. Today his name is best known for the Pulitzer Prizes, which were established in 1917 as a result of his funding to Columbia University. The prizes are given annually to recognize and reward excellence in American journalism, photography, literature, history, poetry, music, and drama. Pulitzer founded the Columbia School of Journalism by his philanthropic legacy.
