remember this from the 70's. this site was the last site from a kashubian fishing village that was established there in 1870's they held no deeds to the land so milwaukee evicted them to make a wonderful industrial park. the bar owner and wife, the last 2 residents of jones island when it was an island and not a peninsula, was evicted in 1943 after saying he wanted to live there till he died.. he died in early 1944. these kashubians were from what is now the northern coast of poland, had their own language (not polish)... 6 trees, grass, picnic table, huge boat anchor.

My husband heard about this little park and we decided to visit it yesterday. It is tiny, but represents a great piece of Milwaukee history. Since visiting I've done some online research of the Kaszubes of Jones Island. I would encourage anyone to look into it.

Kaszube's Park, City of Milwaukee. MKE's smallest park is located on Jones Island at the extreme northern end of South Car Ferry Drive. To say that the setting is industrial is an understatement as it doesn't get much more industrial than this. In the 1870's Jones Island was inhabited by a multicultural group of maybe 2,000 who made their living fishing in Lake Michigan. This park allows the history buff to take a moment to remember a part of early Milwaukee's history that has largely been forgotten. A sharp eye can find this park from the Hoan Bridge looking north. Based on the beverage containers in the bin, I suspect that this park is much more highly visited than one may anticipate from a daytime visit.
