Enjoyed Shen Yun 2023 with my college-age daughter. We both loved the elegance and comfort of the venue. The show itself was very much worth the price of admission as it had impressive art, delightful music expertly played by an east-west musical orchestra, and a variety of sorts where we witnessed dancing, aerobics, drama, and storytelling.

What a delight to step into this venue with grand staircase and unique art. Staff were friendly, lots of leg room in seats and the best red house wine!

McCaw Hall is not the best place in the world for opera, but the sight lines and acoustics are very good. We’ve been here twice for Wagner’s Ring; this time we made a special trip from Victoria to Seattle to attend a performance of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird. It turned out to be a very interesting and tuneful jazz-influenced work, which was first performed in Philadelphia in 2015, with some very fine performances by mostly young singers. The performances began this weekend; if you have an interest in opera you should try to get to it between now and March 7.

We went here for a performance of the Seattle Opera’s Rigoletto,” and I could not see the stage for the entire first Act, which lasted for about 1 hour. I sat on the second level in the middle section. The patrons in front of me proved to be extremely tall and totally blocked my view, regardless of how much I moved around. When I looked at the titles above the stage for some understanding about what was happening below, I realized that the words were too small for me to read. The voices, however, were rich and powerful and kept me awake. I almost left at Intermission, but returned, hoping to find an empty seat. Successful, I enjoyed the last two Acts with a clear view and an appreciation of the set, the cast’s modern attire and the singers. But this failed to make up for all that time in the dark, in more ways than one. Perhaps the building’s next renovation will include staggered seats and the titles presented on a small screen in front of each seat. Traffic can become congested by the opera house and parking difficult to find. On the afternoon we were there, about 15,000 people had appeared next to the venue to attend a rally focused on one of the contenders for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. I highly recommend taking public transportation as many bus routes include stops by the Seattle Center, where McCaw Hall is located.
