New York City Hall
New York City Hall Building ·$

Still home to the office of the Mayor and the Chambers of New York City, New York City Hall is the oldest functioning city hall in the United States. Located in Lower Manhattan in City Hall Park (Civic Center), the city hall was finished in 1812 and is registered as a National Historic Landmark. Today, the building is still one of the most visited structures in the city due to its French Renaissance architecture and its Georgian-style construction on the interior of the building. The city hall is surrounded by beautiful gardens and adjacent government buildings and you can always find politicians and government workers milling around during lunch hour. The building is also a popular landmark often seen in movies and television shows filmed in New York City like Ghostbusters and Spin City.

This is a major government building and is notable, but unfortunately not all that attractive. It is part of a vital city hall area in lower Manhattan and easy to pass by as it is not an eye-cacher.

It's one of the oldest city halls in America - over 200 years old. We had it on our list to visit places but the day we came it was closed. We spoke with some officials at the gate who advised to come later in the week but unfortunately we would be on the way to Vermont. At least we saw exterior of this beautiful historical building and the beautiful park in front of it. Hopefully at our next visit to the city we will visit it.

While exploring downtown Manhattan after a long walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, I stopped by City Hall and I’m glad I did! The building is stunning, with impressive architecture that really stands out. I later found out it’s one of the oldest functioning city halls in the U.S., which makes it even more special. There’s also a peaceful park nearby with food trucks where you can sit, relax, or take a break.

Idy wanted to do this tour since The Before Times, so was thrilled to get a spot on my return visit in 2023.Our docent, Mary Beth Betts, met us in the courtyard outside City Hall and took us all back to the days when NYC was still in its growing phases. We learned about how the site evolved, and about the, er, oft colorful characters that served as Mayor of NYC.The tour visited the Governor's room and City Hall Council Chambers, as well as stops along the way to learn about the amazing architecture and interior design. Just delightful glimpses into history. Our group was lucky, as the mayor himself had just completed a press conference before the tour began. Lots of staffers were still in evidence, and all were graciously welcoming.A great insight into the early days of NYC, and how City Hall has endured into the 21st century.
