The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark is located on the banks of the North Concho River. This historic place was built in the 19th Century to protect the city from hostile threats. The fort covered nearly 1600 acres of land which consisted of 40 buildings, each serving a specific purpose. The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark now stands strong with only a few buildings existing such as the barracks, the schoolhouse, the officers row, the headquarters and more. The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark now mainly serves as a reminder of the city's bravery and military accomplishments.

tripadvisorThis is one of the most well preserved old forts in America. It is in the city of San Angelo and was actually private residences from the closing of the fort until the establishment of the national historical landmark. The Army abandoned the fort in 1889 and almost immediately the officers quarters were scooped up as private residences and the larger barracks converted to storage and barns. Through the 1900's efforts were underway to preserve the fort as a national landmark which finally happened in 1961. lots to do and see here for a morning and don't miss the telephony museum on site....everything about the development of the telephone
MoreEducational and time traveling ! It was nice to be able to walk through the homes at your own pace and see the times specific living quarters and military daily items they had to do. The buildings are neat as they’re still standing and stronger than most buildings we build today. If you like military history and just seeing history, this is a good visual with hands on periods! Low cost and takes about 45-1 hour to see it all.
MoreFort Concho is located in San Angelo. It is easy to access and walk around the buildings. Some buildings are open, allowing us to view historically appropriate furniture in the rooms.
MoreFort Concho is a short walk from the San Angelo art museum which are booth a nice walk along the river from the tourist information centre where there is free parking. The fort is still in its original layout with a lot of the original buildings still standing, plus the entrance building has some amazing artefacts from the time the fort was active. It’s a good couple of hours to walk around it and take in the history and story of Fort Concho.
MoreHistoric Fort Concho is about a 15 minute walk across the river from downtown San Angelo. Admission was a reasonable $5 and staff on site were extremely friendly and helpful. The site is huge and there are lots of buildings to explore. Definitely a must visit if you’re in San Angelo.
