Aviles Street is the oldest continuously inhabited European street in the Americas. Excavations under Aviles Street have confirmed its providence and it has shown that it harkens back to at least the late 16th Century, quite possibly even during the establishment of the city in 1565. Its age notwithstanding, Aviles Street is still very quaint today, where visitors will find that it's filled with shops, restaurants and historic architecture galore. Some of the highlights include the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, the O'Reilly House and the Spanish Military Hospital Museum.
This block of houses on historic St. George Street proudly displays various homes and their architectural styles from 1790 to 1910. The block encompasses lower St. George Street around Bridge and Cordova Streets. In the late 1940s, architectural lover, Kenneth Dow purchased the nine houses and he fervently maintained their historic character. Thankfully, due to his benevolence, we still have historic architectural treasures like the Prince Murat and Canova houses as well as the ability to walk in a neighborhood that takes you back to the 18th Century.
