With a history of more than 200 years, Fort Wadsworth is one of the longest-garrisoned military installations. The fort, situated in a strategic location, offered a natural line of defense for the state. The place is now open to the public as part of the Gateway National Recreational area and is managed by National Parks Service. With lush greenery around and a majestic view, the fort is a good spot for camping and picnics. The management also offers educational tours for visitors. It is interesting to note that this fort is also the starting point of the New York City Marathon and the annual recreational cycling event.
