Packard Service Building

The Packard Service Building is a historic structure built in 1910 and is located in the Alphabet Historic District. Made with the Chicago School style of architecture, this commercial building was designed by architect William Christmas Knighton. The Packard Service Building became a part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

You will not find much more than an endless sky and huge field here, and thank goodness! This open space provides the perfect environment to let loose with seven acres of grassy knolls awaiting plans for development. This primitive park overlooks the towering trees of its Westside neighborhood. The lot is ideal for kite flying and you will find many taking advantage of just that. Dickinson Park is located just off Interstate Highway five, about 10 minutes south of downtown.

The Old Church

One of the most remarkable historic churches and landmarks in Portland is this church, built in 1883 and outlasting any other church. Both the interior and exterior of the church will amaze visitors with its detailed gothic architecture and such beautiful features as Victorian furniture and the ancient Hook and Hastings Tracker organ. Admission is free, and self-guided tours are available at the times and days listed. The church also doubles up as a concert hall with its excellent acoustic features and is also used as an event and renting space.

Weather Machine

When you see this 25-feet (7.62 meter) column with a sphere at the top, you might think this is straight out of the Wizard of Oz. But behold, this thing really works. At high noon, the tower sings a song and then heralds the weather of the day and a yellow-orange sun for those rare occasions, a dragon for the stormy day or a blue heron for drizzle, the most popular player. This little-known landmark has brought smiles to all kinds of faces.
