Terwilliger Boulevard Parkway

This boulevard is named for James Terwilliger, one of downtown's first inhabitants. He acquired this land through a series of trades and it eventually became the first tract of the parkway. The 2.5-mile stretch of Terwilliger Boulevard offers some of the best views in Portland. A woody forest provides an excellent frame for Mount Hood looming in the distance. One of four parkways proposed in 1903, Terwilliger is the only boulevard that has been completed.

Ankeny Plaza

Before Pioneer Place, there was this plaza. The original center of downtown Portland, the plaza was alive with business and entertainment and had a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It got a facelift in the 1980s when MAX, the local light rail, made tracks. The square is busy on weekends now, thanks to the Saturday Market, a city flea market and bazaar. The square, complete with Skidmore Fountain circa 1888, still has a bit of an historic feel.

First Christian Church

Located in the heart of downtown, First Christian Church has exhibited a peaceful aura for years. The original congregation was formed in 1878, and this beautiful church, erected in 1923, was the fourth one built. The church was remodeled in 1985. Visitors will recognize the church from its red roof and soaring white columns. Breathtaking stained glass windows and a German grand piano are among the eye-catching details inside. The church is open to everyone and participates in community outreach programs.
