Hogan Park
Nestled in the sweeping, arid recesses of Llano Estacado, this sprawling state park showcases a wealth of archetypal Texan scenery. The park is predominantly characterized by wind-swept sand dunes, and bears a semi-desert topography. Peppered with sporadic tufts of vegetation like the quintessential Shinoak shrubs, this park is where coyotes and rodents coyly cruise their way across geometric, sandy ripples. Established in 1957, this state park is both, a historical and a geological marvel. Spanish explorers over 400 years ago, were the first to describe the massive dunes, although Native Americans had inhabited the area for hundreds of years. The Native Americans are known to ahve lived around the area until the 1880s, when it became a water stop for the rail-road. Today, the state park features a visitor center with equipment rentals for sand surfing.
