Mccormick Observatory

A gem atop Mount Jefferson, McCormick Observatory is operated by the University of Virginia's Department of Astronomy. It takes its name from Leander J. McCormick, the inventor and philanthropist who funded the observatory. Although it is predominantly used for teaching purposes, visitors are invited to the observatory to see the stars on the first and third Friday every month. Beyond enjoying the 26-inch McCormick Refractor telescope, you can tour the site, listen to lecturing astronomers, and check out the exhibits. Lee Park is spread across a large piece of land enclosed by First Street North East, Market Street and Jefferson Street. One of the highlights of the park is an arresting equestrian memorial dedicated to Robert E. Lee.
