The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a 300-acre natural area situated on the south shore of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. It represents about one-third of the main campus and includes 4.3 miles of Lake Mendota shoreline. The Preserve is a living classroom and laboratory for the teaching and research needs of the UW-Madison as well as a place for campus and community members alike to experience nature, find respite, and improve their well-being. The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is best known for the Howard Temin Lakeshore Path (the only path where biking is allowed) and Picnic Point, a wooded peninsula that juts nearly a mile into the lake.
