When we called to get an estimate to move a 1,600-square-foot three-bedroom house, we got to speak with the business owner, Josh Schwartz. Josh was incredibly helpful, friendly and eager to hear all about our move.

For a local move of about 20 miles, he quoted us a ballpark estimate of $1,500. This price includes the hourly rate for three movers ($210), a 26-foot truck and the cost of travel. He also mentioned that they have a three-hour minimum for their work. After the three-hour mark, you'll be charged in 15-minute increments. Heavy items aren't a problem, but they charge an additional fee to move any items over 500 pounds.

There's a $50 deposit to book a local move that is non-refundable if you cancel, and a 30% down payment for long-distance moves (also non-refundable). The down payment for long-distance moves goes toward your total cost. You can pay with cash, card, Venmo or Zelle. Card payments will incur a 3.5% processing fee. While we were told that background checks aren't performed on movers, Josh said he's been working with the same group of guys for more than two years.

You've probably already heard of Two Men and a Truck before. The company is a franchise, with locations all across the nation. The Knoxville location has been in business for more than 25 years, performing both local and long-distance moves, as well as various other services. 

We called the business to get an estimate to move a 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom house about 20 miles. The quote process was quite long, requiring a full inventory of belongings and a view of your home before discussing price. 

After about 25 minutes of questions about our house, the sales representative gave us a rough ballpark estimate of $1,900 to $2,110. This price includes the hourly rate for four movers ($260), a flat travel fee of $174 and two trucks. They have a one-hour minimum for all moves.

To book with them, you'll pay the flat travel fee up front, which is different for every move. Since it's based on your travel distance, it can get expensive for long-distance moves, but it does go directly toward the total cost of your move. This amount is refundable as long as you give more than 48 hours' notice of cancellation. Failure to do so will result in a $250 fine. They'll take cash or card payments, and you won't be charged any transaction fees if you decide to pay with a bank card. The sales representative also assured us that everyone on the moving crew is trained and background-checked.
