Top Lincoln movers

The best moving company in Lincoln for YOU

As you evaluate movers, know what you need going in. If you're moving apartments within the city, a moving company that specializes in small moves and knows the area well might offer the best service. If, on the other hand, you're prepping for an interstate move and need a lot of packing and unpacking support (and storage options in the interim), then a larger firm that can oversee your belongings all the way through the process is a huge help. You'll also want to make sure your company of choice has the availability and pricing that fit your needs.

The best overall moving company in Lincoln is Firefighters on the Move , a full-service moving company founded by and run by firefighters who pride themselves on hard work and customer service. Whether you need a small local change of address, a move into assisted living, or a long-distance or commercial move, Firefighters on the Move has the expertise and the team to make the process as smooth and hassle-free as possible. Two Men and a Truck in Lincoln is our top alternative pick for those who prefer working with a long-established local mover that offers transparent pricing and dependable service.

Founded by firefighters in Omaha, Neb., Firefighters on the Move has been a Cornhusker State fixture since 2007. The company handles both local and long-distance moves and prides itself on bringing the same sense of trust and dependability it earns in public service to move day, and earning rave reviews from satisfied customers doing it.

Almost 20 years after the company's founding, the staff at Firefighters on the Move maintains its connection to its founding. When we spoke to the company, they estimated that half of the current crew they use for 100 moves a week currently work as firefighters. The rest are all connected somehow: The sons or brothers or nephews of firefighters, all of them personally known to the crew. While the company doesn't independently background check its employees, the representative noted that any current firefighters pass a background check as part of their employment.

The company charges $270 an hour for a standard four-mover, one-truck crew ($54 an hour for each mover and $54 an hour for the truck) and said it doesn't have an hourly minimum. For a 1,400-square-foot, three-bedroom home, it estimates about two-and-a-half to three hours to load and the same to unload, plus travel time.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance residential moves

  • Commercial moves

  • Senior moves

  • Moves for heavy items like pianos and gun safes

  • Packing services

  • Load and unload service

Payment is accepted by cash, check or credit card, although there is a 3.5% surcharge assessed on credit card payments. No deposit is required to hold your date, although Firefighters on the Move won't add your move to the schedule until you're committed to moving forward with them. (The company recommends booking your date at least four weeks out, or more during the busier spring season.)

Firefighters on the Move is not accredited or rated by the BBB but has no complaints on file. The company's reviews on social sites are stellar, with a 4.9-star rating on both Google across 84 reviews and Angi through 15 reviews. Firefighters on the Move's rating across 27 reviews on Yelp is slightly lower at 4.1 stars. The majority of the reviews are uniformly positive, but a few complain about non-responsiveness, incomplete work, and some damage to items.

If you're ready for a quote, call Firefighters on the Move at 402-840-1120, or request one by email at [email protected] . The company's office is located at 16111 Madison St., Omaha, Neb., 68135, and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.

Two Men and a Truck is our top alternative Lincoln mover

Movers from Two Men and a Truck unload a large item from a company moving truck

Two Men and a Truck promise to treat every person they move the way you'd want your grandma to be treated, a policy they call "The Grandma Rule." It was inspired by the involvement of founder Mary Ellen Sheet's mother (grandmother to original movers Brig and Jon Sheet) in the early days of the business, and it's the legacy the Lincoln franchise of the firm strives to live up to with each move.

The Lincoln location, one of the company's first 10 franchises, has served the greater Lincoln area since 1990, and has earned a sterling reputation (and hundreds of five-star Google reviews) for reliable and affordable moves. When we spoke with Two Men and a Truck Lincoln, the company representative said the hourly rate for a three-mover crew could be as low as $140 to $150 an hour for moves completed Monday to Thursday, but could go higher to $160 to $170 an hour for moves on Friday, Saturday and Sunday depending on demand. (Smaller moves with fewer movers will have a lower rate.) That rate covers fuel, the movers, and the supplies as needed, as well as the truck. The company doesn't have an hourly minimum, so the least you might spend is $140 on weekdays and $160 on weekends.

The clock starts when the truck leaves the warehouse and stops when it returns, and covers all the packing, unpacking, loading, and transporting. It also covers any protective supplies. There are no additional charges on top of the hourly rate, although unexpected stops or delays will incur more hourly charges.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance moves

  • Business moves

  • Loading and unloading

  • Senior moves

  • Apartment and college moves

  • Storage

  • Packing services

  • Heavy-item moving

Two Men and a Truck accepts payment by cash, check or credit card. There are no additional fees for credit card payment. The movers do require a $100 deposit, but $95 of the deposit is refundable if you cancel with at least three days' notice.

The company is accredited by the BBB and has been since 1995, and has an A+ rating with 19 complaints listed in the past five years. (Complaints on the site include complaints lodged against both Two Men And A Truck's headquarters and all its corporate-owned locations, not just the Lincoln location.) The company also background-checks its movers.

The vast majority of the company's reviews are on Google, where they have an excellent 4.6-star rating across 740 reviews. The ratings are lower on Yelp, where Two Men and a Truck has a two-star rating from 29 reviews, with reviewers complaining about careless packing and damages during moves. On Angi, the company has a 3.2-star rating from nine reviews, with some reviewers saying the company's trucks were smaller than they had requested.

To request a quote, you can call Two Men and a Truck at 402-395-8300 or text 402-466-4669, or online on the company's website . Two Men and a Truck's Lincoln office is located at 6400 Cornhusker Highway, Suite 225, Lincoln, Neb., 68507. It is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. BLVD Moving is the best national moving company

A BLVD Moving semi-truck in a parking lot

A BLVD Moving semi-truck in a parking lot

At Yahoo Local our goal is to help people feel confident when making moving decisions. We enjoy highlighting local businesses, but depending on your situation, a national mover may be the better fit. If you are deciding between the two, see our guide to local vs. national movers . For those looking for a top-rated nationwide provider , our No. 1 recommendation is BLVD Moving.

BLVD Moving is led by a management team with decades of experience in the relocation industry. The company operates from four California offices, yet it provides local and long-distance moving services across the country. It remains family-owned and independent, using its own fleet of trucks and full-time movers. The terms of service state that subcontractors or third-party partners may be used during high-demand periods, which is standard practice within the industry.

We contacted BLVD Moving for a quote on a 500-mile move requiring about 1,340 cubic feet of space, roughly the amount needed for a three-bedroom home without large appliances. The estimate came to about $6,700, which is consistent with other national movers. To confirm a move, the company requires a 33% deposit, with half of the remaining balance due at pickup and the final portion at delivery.

Services offered

  • Local moves

  • Long-distance moves

  • Residential, office and commercial moves

  • Packing services

  • Storage

  • Financing

If you need to cancel, BLVD Moving will refund deposits as long as the cancellation is made at least two full business days before pickup. Delivery windows range from two to 21 business days depending on distance. The countdown begins on your selected delivery date, so if you are not ready to receive your items immediately, the total time could extend to just over a month.

The company recommends booking at least a month in advance, especially during busy seasons like summer or at the beginning and end of each month. (See our guide to the best and worst times to move .) Getting an estimate is straightforward since you can schedule a virtual walkthrough or complete an online inventory form. Financing is also available for eligible customers, with interest rates starting at 0%.

BLVD Moving is accredited by the BBB with a B rating and approximately 95 registered complaints. While that number may appear high, it is typical among national movers. Customer feedback is mixed, with a 4.3-star rating on Google based on more than 1,200 reviews and 2.2 stars on Yelp from over 370 reviews. All movers are full-time employees who have passed background checks.

The BLVD Moving headquarters is located at 21622 Plummer Street, Chatsworth, Calif., 91311. The company is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time. You can call BLVD Moving at 844-274-0500 or request a quote online .

Nebraska moving FAQs

What info should you have when requesting an estimate?

Most movers will need to know the same things about your property to create an estimate. When you're ready to get started, it's helpful to have a few pieces of information on hand:

  • Whether you're moving from or to a house or an apartment

  • The square footage of your home, and/or the number of bedrooms and other spaces (including basements, sheds, or storage areas)

  • The address (or at least the zip code) of your current place, and the address or zip code of your new place.

Of course, the more information you can provide, the more accurate your estimate will be. Other things to consider sharing with the moving company are what time of year you're moving, whether your dates are fixed or flexible, and if you have any materials requiring special handling, like pianos, exercise equipment or gun safes. Our guide to what information you need to get an accurate moving company estimate can help.

What should you know about packing and storage in Nebraska?

The weather across Nebraska varies as you go from east to west, but in Lincoln, located in the eastern part of the state, you find a true four-season climate, with hot and humid summers, cold and snowy winters, and fall and spring seasons that transition between the two.

Those temperature extremes can be hard on wood furniture, electronics, rugs and other fabric items, and especially hard on things like antiques, art, collectibles, or musical instruments. (If you'll be storing any delicate items, check out our guide to moving antiques and other valuables for additional considerations.)

The bottom line? If you're going to be storing your belongings between moves, you may want to consider a climate-controlled storage facility , which will offer your items the most protection from the highs and lows of both temperature and humidity.

Apart from the weather, a major consideration for anyone moving to Nebraska is moisture. You'll also want to ensure that your storage facility has adequate protection against water, which is one of the biggest risk factors. No matter what kind of storage you choose, check out our tips for preventing water damage in self-storage units .

What's different about condo and apartment moving in Nebraska?

If you'll be moving to or from a condominium or apartment building, there may be a few additional considerations you'll want to plan for. If you live in or are moving to a walk-up building, it can be a good idea to let your movers know in advance so they can make arrangements for heavy or awkward items. If you'll be moving to or from an elevator building, it can be helpful to coordinate with the building manager or super to reserve the elevator (or a service elevator, if your building has one). The building manager may also have suggestions on parking or unloading that will minimize disruption and potential damage to your possessions or the building itself.

Some buildings or condo associations require that moving companies working in their building have a certificate of insurance (or COI) that attests that the company is insured against damages to the building. If your building requests a COI, contact your moving company to make sure they can provide one. (Note that some companies will assess a fee for this.)

Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Nebraska?

While moving companies operating in the state of Nebraska need to be licensed, individuals or households do not need any permits or licenses to move. Moving companies operating in the state need a Household Goods Mover License from the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC), during which new movers complete a background check. All moving companies working in Nebraska need to have a USDOT Number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and they need to display that number as well as their company name on both sides of their trucks. Additionally, moving companies need to carry a minimum of $750,000 in liability coverage and $5,000 in cargo coverage. You can check a company's licensing status at the PSC's Household Goods Movers License List . Read our guide to Nebraska moving company licensing and regulations to learn more.

If you're moving specifically within Lincoln, Neb., you may need to arrange for a permit to park the moving truck if it will impede traffic during loading or unloading, and additional permitting if the truck is oversized or overweight. For more details or to determine if you'll need to apply for a permit , you can contact the City of Lincoln Department of Building and Safety at 402-441-7521.

How much should you tip movers in Nebraska?

While tipping is completely optional, many people do want to recognize their movers, especially if they did an exceptionally good job or went above and beyond with difficult-to-move items or challenging circumstances. A frequently used formula is $5 to $10 an hour per person. For a crew of three people for five hours, for example, you would tip $25 to $50 a person, or $75 to $150 in total. For larger or long-distance moves, some people tip a flat rate of 10% to 20%. It's traditional to tip in cash (plan ahead to have the right denominations on hand), but some moving companies are able to add a tip to your final payment. For more information about tipping, read our guide to tipping movers .
