Quick overview
The best moving company in Manhattan for YOU
Let's face it — moving in Manhattan has some unique challenges. Whether you're upgrading to that dream apartment in the West Village or relocating for work, the logistics (never mind the parking situation) can feel overwhelming. You can take a deep breath knowing Yahoo Local's got your back with insider tips to make this process smoother.
No one likes surprise fees on moving day. Manhattan movers typically structure their pricing either as hourly or flat rates. From our research, JP Urban Moving consistently offers the most bang for your buck for a typical two-bedroom move across the city. When you're vetting potential movers, remember to ask about:
-
Building requirements, like a certificate of insurance (COI) or elevator reservations
-
How the company handles parking
-
Extra fees for heavy items
-
Stair charges (if you're in a walk-up)
When you book can impact availability and your wallet. Peak season hits from spring through late fall. Expect three- to four-week waiting lists and premium prices. The absolute busiest times are the end and beginning of months (when leases turn over) and weekends.
If you can swing a mid-month, mid-week move during the winter, you'll likely score better rates and have more scheduling options. And if you're in a time crunch, try Lifestyle Moving & Storage , which has built a reputation for handling last-minute moves without panic-inducing prices.
Finding a "perfect" mover in Manhattan might be as rare as finding a rent-controlled apartment, but that doesn't mean you have to settle. Think about what matters most to you — maybe it's price or date flexibility, or maybe it's just having movers that won't treat your vintage record collection like a frisbee. Every move is different, and what worked for your friend's studio might not be the best fit for your walk-up. The good news? These insights already put you ahead of the game in finding a mover that fits your needs and budget.
We chose JP Urban Moving as our overall top moving company in Manhattan. It handles local and interstate moves within a 1,200-mile radius and charges $150 per hour for a two-person crew to $170 per hour for a three-person crew, which is very competitive. With nearly a decade in business, JP Urban has an A+ BBB rating and 4.9-star Google and 5-star Yelp ratings.

JP Urban Moving is the best mover in Manhattan overall
JP Urban Moving
JP Urban Moving has prioritized developing long-term customer relationships since its founding in 2011. The company has built such strong connections that it often assists the same clients through multiple life stages, from individual moves to couples moving in together and long-time customers deciding to downsize, co-founder Julia Pak told Yahoo Local.
Initially specializing in local residential relocations, the company expanded its services to include packing and unpacking. While not directly offering organizing services, they maintain a partnership with Urban Clarity for New York-based customers. Most of JP Urban's moves occur along the East Coast, with a 1,200-mile range.
Peak season hits in mid-May and ends in mid-September. Pak recommends that clients book their moves at least 3-4 weeks out to secure their desired date. The company's rates range from $150 to $170 per hour with a three-person team, and it has a two-hour minimum requirement. Pak estimates a typical three-bedroom home relocation costs approximately $2,500 to $3,500.

Customer testimonial
Yet another fabulous experience with this amazing group of highly professional people. This is our third move with them, and they are beyond perfection. How they could do such a caring job wrapping and protecting the furniture and expertly wrapping and protecting everything in such a short time is a miracle I can't explain, even though I watched the whole thing unfold. They pay attention to every detail, they are extremely kind and thoughtful at every step, their price is low for the incredible quality of their service. I cannot say enough about these folks. I am deeply indebted to them for making the anxiety that comes with a move just melt away. They are the best. - Ray B., Google reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Lifestyle Moving & Storage is a great Manhattan mover for last-minute moves
"Moving isn't just another business transaction for us," Ivan Martinovic, CEO of Lifestyle Movers, told Yahoo Local. "We know it's stressful and personal, and we provide a personal touch from that first inquiry until the end by assigning a dedicated consultant who helps them during every stage of the journey." Lifestyle takes time to learn a little about each client — whether they prefer to be hands-off or very involved — so it can match the right foreman to the job, he added.
Lifestyle Moving's busy season stretches from May through September. Martinovic said they see a correlation between the size of a move and how far out clients book. Smaller moves typically book 1-2 weeks out, while larger moves book three to six weeks in advance. "We are also able to service last-minute moves resulting from unpredictable situations," he said.
In addition to local moves, Lifestyle Moving offers long-distance interstate moving, white-glove, full and partial packing and unpacking services, junk removal, furniture assemble and disassembly and storage services.

Local and long-distance moving
-

-
Same-day moving (based on availability)

Storage
Martinovic said the company provides hourly estimates when it makes sense for a customer, such as a same-building move, because there aren't many unpredictable things that could affect the duration. Most estimates are binding, which means the customer knows the full price upfront. The estimate won't change unless the customer changes the scope of the work order during the move. If necessary, the company will incorporate a fuel surcharge for longer moves.
A binding estimate will also include an excess weight surcharge for specialty items. If movers must navigate excessive stairs, the binding estimate will include a per-flight charge to compensate for the additional time required.
We asked about the cost of moving a two-bedroom, 900-square-foot apartment with typical furniture and 25 boxes 100 miles. Martinovic said the estimate would average about $2,400. The company requires a $50 deposit on moves under $1,499 and 10% on moves over $1,500. The deposit is fully refundable.
The company isn't BBB-accredited and currently has an F rating due to a failure to respond to two complaints. However, it averages 4.9 stars on Google (337 reviews) and 4.7 stars on Yelp (80 reviews). The company also does background checks on all employees, including full-time and subcontract workers.
Lifestyle Moving & Storage is located at 99 Hudson St., 5th Floor #7148, New York, N.Y., 10013. Its hours are 8 a.m. through 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. through 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Gentle Giant Moving Company is the most environmentally-friendly Manhattan mover
Gentle Giant Moving & Storage
Since 1980, Gentle Giant has focused on building a moving company known for top-notch quality and service. "We believe in treating our employees compassionately and with respect and expect them to treat our customers the same," sales consultant Dominic Gennaro told Yahoo Local.

This full-service moving company, based in Massachusetts, can handle local and long-distance moves plus long- or short-term storage. It also offers full and partial packing plus unpacking services.
When we spoke in mid-February, Gennaro said they had plenty of availability for March, but he recommends booking your move at least two to three weeks in advance, especially in spring and summer. While the company offers last-minute moves, it's dependent on availability, he said.

I've done a lot of moves over the last few years, but my move with Gentle Giant last week is I've ever had. Tony and his team were absolutely incredible. They're super nice guys, and packed my entire 3-bedroom apartment up extremely quickly and with great care. The loading and unloading w as just as fast. BLVD Moving is the best national moving company
Members of the BLVD Moving team load a company truck during a move
Yahoo Local is here to help people make smart, confident decisions. We enjoy highlighting local businesses, but depending on your move, a national company might make more sense. If you're weighing your options, check out our guide comparing local and national movers . If you choose to go the national route, our top pick is BLVD Moving .
BLVD Moving opened in 2000 and is run by a team with decades of moving experience. It has four locations in California but handles both local and long-distance moves throughout the U.S. It's a family-run, independent company that owns its own trucks and employs its own movers. Still, the terms mention it may bring in subcontractors or agents to help with certain moves — a common industry practice during busy times.
We reached out to BLVD Moving for a quote on a 500-mile move involving about 1,340 cubic feet of belongings — roughly what you'd expect for a three-bedroom house without large appliances. The estimate came in around $6,700, which is on par with what other long-distance movers typically charge. It requires a 33% deposit to book, with half of the remaining balance due at pickup. The final payment is collected at delivery.
Services offered
-
Local and long-distance moves
-
Residential, commercial, and office relocations
-
Professional packing
-
Short- and long-term storage
-
Financing options for eligible customers
If you need to cancel, BLVD Moving will give your deposit back as long as you cancel at least two full business days before the scheduled pickup. The delivery window ranges from two to 21 business days, depending on the distance. That window begins from the delivery date you choose — so once you're ready to receive your things, you might be waiting a little over a month.
It's a good idea to book your move at least a month in advance — or earlier if you're planning to move during peak times like summer or the start or end of the month. (See our full guide on the best and worst times to move for more.) Getting a quote is simple — you can set up a virtual walkthrough or submit an online inventory list for a faster estimate. BLVD also offers financing to those who qualify, with interest rates starting at 0%.
BLVD Moving is accredited by the BBB and holds a B+ rating, with 87 complaints on file. While that number might seem high, it's fairly typical for large-scale national movers. It has a 4.3-star rating on Google based on 1,110 reviews and a 2.3-star average on Yelp from 365 reviews. All of its movers are direct employees who pass background checks.
The company's headquarters is located at 21622 Plummer St., Chatsworth, Calif. 91311. It's open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time. To get a quote, call 844-274-0500 or visit its website .
Customer testimonial
The movers worked quickly and didn't try to cram everything into one trip. They listened when I asked to keep certain boxes separate and made sure everything ended up in the right place. I felt well taken care of throughout the move. - Jack C., Google reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
* See Google reviews * See Yelp reviews
BLVD Moving is our top pick for a national mover due to its combination of experience, flexibility and relatively strong Google reviews. It has background-checked crews, but it also reserves the right in its terms and conditions to subcontract your move or assign it to agents. The quote process is smooth, in our experience, requiring a simple online inventory, and BLVD's cancellation policy is relatively good.
- Background-checked crews
- Offers virtual estimates
- Has its own movers and fleet
- Local and long-distance moves
- Mixed Yelp ratings
- No GPS tracking
- Can subcontract jobs to other movers
- Relatively high deposit
Expo Movers and Storage is the most affordable Manhattan mover for short moves
Expo Movers
Whether you're moving around the corner or across the country, Expo Movers and Storage serves every state except Hawaii and Alaska, marketing director Alexi Melnyk told Yahoo Local. The company strives to maintain its five-star rating because it's based in the community it serves. "We run this agency on three core principles: honesty, competence, and thoroughness. That way, every move we handle speaks for itself — it's a direct reflection of our work ethic," Melnyk added.
Like other movers on our list, Expo Movers is busiest from early spring through late fall, the middle of most months (14th-16th) and the end of the month. While you can typically secure a date within 1-2 weeks, you may want to plan about a month ahead during warmer seasons. Have a last-minute move? They can often help, though rush service costs more, Melnyk said.
The company keeps pricing straightforward with flat rates based on cubic feet that take into account the move distance and your possessions. Be prepared for potential additional costs like a fuel surcharge for longer trips or an excess stairs surcharge. Expo Movers and Storage requires a $150 deposit, though it's refundable up to 72 hours in advance of your move. While the company doesn't have a minimum number of hours for your move, expect to pay a minimum $450 fee that covers the crew and travel time.

We asked about the cost for a typical two-bedroom (900 square feet and 25 boxes and regular furniture) 20-mile move and were quoted $1,600. But keep in mind that details like how far the truck may need to park from either building could impact the final cost.
"Customer service is at the heart of what we do," said Melnyk. "We've developed a reputation for stepping in when other moving companies fall through and can help people who need same-day service. We also keep you in the loop throughout the process and actively seek feedback after each move. If anything falls short of expectations, we reach out to make it right."
Expo Movers is also well-connected within the moving industry and sometimes partners with other companies for long-distance moves. While it brings in contract workers to accommodate higher demand during the busy season, it conducts background checks on everyone.
The company's solid reputation is backed by BBB accreditation with an A+ rating and zero complaints. It has a five-star rating on Google (373 reviews) and a 4.8-star rating on Yelp (39 reviews).

Manhattan moving FAQs
What info should you have when requesting an estimate?
When you call or complete a quote request online, you'll need your current address (including floor and unit number), your new address and building requirements and the parking situation at both locations. Movers also often ask about home size (square footage and room count), large furniture and specialty items requiring extra care (pianos, pool tables, antiques, art pieces).
Once you've chosen your moving company, snap pics of your larger items and send them to the mover before the big day. This way, they'll know what equipment and crew size to bring, and you'll avoid surprise fees.
What should you ask when requesting an estimate?
Make sure you're clear about what your quote includes. Flat-rate estimates should cover everything, while hourly rates might include additional charges. Ask for a detailed breakdown before you sign a contract.
Also, ask about whether your estimate is binding or non-binding. A binding estimate (flat rate) safeguards you against unexpected costs, and what you see is what you pay. Non-binding estimates (hourly rates) can leave room for unexpected charges.
Ask about insurance, too, because you have options for protecting your stuff. Moving companies are legally required to offer both released-value and full-value coverage , but you might want additional insurance for peace of mind.
As for payment, most companies take credit cards, but some prefer cash or checks. For some, deposits are standard practice, but not all companies require one upfront.
What should you know about packing and storage in Manhattan?
New York's weather swings from scorching summers to frigid winters, so proper packing is key to protecting items like art, electronics, books, and wood furniture or books from humidity. A climate-controlled storage unit is a worthwhile investment if you plan to store your belongings for a while.
What's different about condo and apartment moving in Manhattan?
When you're moving to or from a condo or apartment (especially above the ground floor), you may encounter some unique challenges. Many buildings have specific rules about using service or freight elevators — like time restrictions or limitations on large items. Other buildings may require you to use the regular elevator, but check with the building superintendent about scheduling and coordinate details with the moving company to avoid delays or extra fees. It's also courteous to inform your fellow residents about your move-in or move-out schedule to avoid surprises and minimize disruptions.
Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Manhattan?
You don't need a special permit if you're moving in or out of Manhattan. However, your moving truck will need a permit if you're moving within New York City. Street cleaning rules and parking restrictions can complicate your move, but the moving company should be familiar with traffic patterns and regulations for commercial vehicles and know the best routes (and how to avoid congestion).
While most areas allow commercial vehicles to park, there are exceptions. In midtown Manhattan, bus and bike lanes, construction zones, and fire hydrants are off-limits, as is blocking traffic. Delivery times are limited to three hours, so check the regulations for your specific street (or verify that your moving company has the information).
Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, a moving truck can't take up more than 10 feet of roadway. Lower Manhattan also has a designated "Blue Zone" with its own set of rules. Within this zone, you can't park on the street on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
To confirm that the Commissioner of Transportation has licensed your moving company, call 618-457-6512 or email nymoving@dot.ny.gov . You can also verify the company's USDOT status by checking the FMCSA website .
For more details, read our in-depth guide to New York City moving permits and licenses . You can also read through our rundown of New York state moving company licensing and regulations .
How much should you tip movers in Manhattan?
It's generally recommended you tip 10% to 20% of your move's total cost, depending on factors like the move complexity, number of things moved, distance and duration. If you paid $2,500, budget up to $500 for excellent service.
Check our guide to tipping your movers for more pointers.
