Top Columbus plumbers

The best plumbing company in Columbus for YOU

We're confident in all of our picks for the top plumbers in Columbus, but we recognize that no single plumber will be perfect for every situation. When you're trying to decide which plumbing company to choose, consider your specific needs and budget. A lot of plumbers offer emergency services, but prioritize companies that have 24/7 availability if you have a sudden burst pipe or other pressing plumbing problem. Otherwise, consider whether a plumber specializes in specific areas, depending on your needs, like water heater repairs or water line installations. Finally, carefully compare fees between a couple of different companies to determine what may fit your budget.

Our top picks for the Columbus area are Safe Electric and Plumbing and West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating . Both plumbers have excellent customer ratings across thousands of reviews, and each is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating. Both are great options for plumbing and electrical services, but West Jefferson also takes care of HVAC and geothermal needs if you're considering other projects.

Safe Electric and Plumbing is the best overall Columbus plumbing company

A Safe Electric and Plumbing van, which the company calls its "warehouse on wheels"

In business since 1994, Safe Electric and Plumbing has built a sterling reputation in the Columbus area for providing quick, professional plumbing and electrical services. While the company's main focus is electrical work, from remodeling to installation and repairs, it also takes on a wide variety of plumbing work from sewer and drain repairs to toilet, water heater and sump pump work.

When we called Safe Electric and Plumbing, the representative we spoke with was incredibly friendly and happy to answer our questions. We asked about the cost to have someone come check out a drain clog in a guest bathroom shower, and the representative confirmed there is a $69 dispatching fee to send a plumber to diagnose the issue. Beyond the dispatch fee, they couldn't give a clear cost for a fix, stating that it depends on the job. The dispatch fee is not applied to the total cost of the work.

Services offered

  • Water heater repair and replacement

  • Sump pump work

  • Leak repairs

  • Toilets repairs and installation

  • Hydrojetting and drain snaking

  • Sewer and drain cleaning

  • Electrical work

Later in our call, the representative offered to have the dispatch fee waived because they already had a plumber in the area, which was a nice bonus. They also mentioned they provide same-day service when plumbers are available, but you may have to wait a day or two during very busy periods. All work is guaranteed for two years, and estimates are honored for a period of six months.

For payment, Safe Electric and Plumbing accepts cash and credit or debit cards. Notably, there's no additional transaction fee for credit card payments, which is uncommon. The company has several coupons available on its website as well, including $50 off any work and a 5% discount for veterans and seniors.

Safe Electric and Plumbing is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating and only two registered complaints. The company has a 4.9-star rating on Google from more than 2,600 reviews and 4.4 stars on Yelp, though only from 18 reviews. All of its workers undergo background checks. Its hours are listed as being available 24/7 for emergency repairs.

Pros

  • Both plumbing and electric work
  • Work guaranteed for two years

West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating is our top alternative Columbus plumber

A West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating truck sits parked in a lot

West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating is the oldest plumber on this list, having gotten its start in 1976. With 50 years of experience under its belt, West Jefferson has earned an excellent reputation in the area and has consistently high customer ratings from nearly 1,000 reviews. While you can call it for myriad plumbing services, the company also handles a wide range of HVAC, geothermal and electrical repair and installation work (including installing EV chargers).

When we called West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating to ask about fixing a drain clog, the representative we spoke to said we could expect a $125 dispatch fee to send a plumber to diagnose the issue, then around $145 per hour after that for any work done. Beyond that, it was somewhat hard to get answers to our questions, with the representative stating the person dispatched would be able to provide more information.

Services offered

  • Water heater installation and repairs

  • Drain cleaning and backflow services

  • Leak repairs

  • Sump pump work

  • Water treatment

  • Water fixture installation

  • HVAC, electrical and geothermal work

For availability, the company said that it was scheduling jobs into the following week, so there was no same-day service at the time we called. The representative confirmed that they don't guarantee work clearing drain clogs because they can't control what goes down the pipe after the work is completed. This is common in the plumbing industry, however, so it shouldn't be seen as a red flag.

You can pay with cash or card, but we weren't able to confirm whether West Jefferson charges a card transaction fee for credit payments. The company also offers financing if you need to spread the cost of large installations or repairs out over time. It also offers occasional coupons on its website, though the only one available at the time of writing was for $2,000 in rebates for Lennox HVAC systems. One nice extra is that you can book online, as well as receive instant quotes for HVAC, water heater and generator installations.

West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating and no registered complaints. Its customer review ratings are also great, with 4.9 stars on Google from more than 800 reviews and 4.4 stars on Yelp from 14 reviews. The representative we spoke with didn't confirm whether workers are background-checked, but said they are all licensed and bonded .The company's business hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It's closed on weekends.

Ohio plumbing FAQs

How do I know if my water heater needs repairs or a full replacement?

It isn't easy to tell whether your water heater needs repairs or a replacement without the help of a professional plumber. However, if you notice signs such as recurring leaks, trouble keeping water hot, or if your water heater is getting old, it may need to be replaced. If your water heater is having issues, but it's still relatively new, it's likely you can get away with a repair.

For more, read our guide to eight surefire signs you need to replace your water heater .

How long does a water heater typically last in Ohio?

With proper maintenance , water heaters can last over a decade, but it largely depends on what type of water heater you have, including the brand and model. Tankless water heaters tend to last longer, between 15 and 20 years, according to Cincinnati-based plumbing and HVAC company Apollo Home . Traditional tank water heaters may last between eight and 15 years, depending on whether they're gas (shorter) or electric (longer).

For more, read our full guide on how long your water heater should last , including tips to extend its lifespan.

What are the most common issues people call plumbers to fix?

Leaks and clogged drains are typically the most common issues plumbers deal with. However, they're trained and used to dealing with everything from water heater maintenance and installation to water pressure issues.

How can I tell if I can fix a plumbing issue myself or if I should call a pro?

Some plumbing issues are relatively minor and are suitable for a DIY fix, including things like some clogged drains and running toilets . However, it's best to realistically assess what you feel comfortable fixing on your own. If drain cleaners and snakes don't fix a clog, it's time to call a professional. More complex jobs, like fixing a leaky water heater, likely require the help of a professional plumber as well. If in doubt, it's best to go with the experts to prevent a minor issue from causing further damage.

Is it better to go with a smaller plumbing company or a larger one?

We typically like to recommend local companies because they're more familiar with issues common to your area and may offer more personalized service over the big guys. However, there are cases where a larger, national chain make sense. Large companies may have better availability to get your issue fixed sooner, so they can be a good alternative in an emergency situation. However, no matter a company's size, it's best to call at least a few plumbers to compare estimates before deciding on one.

Do plumbing companies in Columbus need to be licensed?

Yes, plumbers need to be licensed through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) at the state level for commercial work. Plumbers operating in Columbus must be licensed by the city to work as a Journeyperson plumber.

Do all reputable plumbers do background checks?

A lot of reputable plumbers conduct background checks on the plumbers they employ, but not everyone does. It's an important question to ask as you evaluate which plumber to hire, as you're letting someone you don't know inside of your home. If a company seems hesitant to answer whether their plumbers are background-checked, it could be a red flag. Note that plumbers who are licensed through the state licensing board for commercial work have to undergo a background check as part of the process.

Do plumbers usually charge by the hour or flat rate?

How a plumber charges for their work depends on the company. Some charge an hourly rate in addition to the cost of materials. However, others may have flat rates for common jobs, such as clearing clogged drains or fixing running toilets. You'll more commonly see hourly rates for larger projects, like major pipe replacements and replacing sewer lines.

Should plumbers provide written estimates before beginning a job?

Generally, yes, you should expect a written estimate from any reputable plumber before they start working on a project. This ensures you're both on the same page and charges are clearly spelled out before the work begins, eliminating the likelihood of surprise fees. If your plumber won't provide a written estimate after investigating the issue, treat it as a red flag.

Do plumbers usually offer warranties? And if so, what kind?

On most work that involves replacing or installing new pipes or fixtures, you can expect a guarantee or workmanship warranty on the work. However, it's not as common to receive a work guarantee for smaller jobs like clearing a clogged drain. Some may offer guarantees on these jobs, but they typically don't because they can't control what you put in your drain after the work is complete. As you evaluate plumbers, it's important to ask if the work comes with a guarantee or warranty, and how long it lasts.
