Plano, Texas, might be a suburb of the vast Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, but it's also one of Texas's largest cities in its own right. Sharing services with Dallas to the South, the city has no shortage of great home service providers to choose from, and plumbing is no exception. The Yahoo Local team evaluated the top plumbers serving Plano, ranking them based on online reviews, Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation and required licensing, then we called up the top four picks for an in-depth personal look at what makes them great. Whether you've got a persistently clogged drain or you need specialized diagnostic work performed on your home's pipes, here are the best plumbers to call today.

Top Plano plumbers

The best plumbing company in Plano for YOU

There are so many factors to consider when you're looking for a great plumber, but at the top of most people's list is availability. Clogged drains, failing toilets and burst pipes are all common reasons to call plumbers, and none of these eventualities can usually be put off for long.

Still, no matter how pressing the issue, it's important to ensure that the plumber you hire is reputable. Online reviews help pinpoint plumbers who do good work. However, it's also important to check licensing information. This helps ensure that the work you hire them to perform is done up to code and that they're insured, in case anything goes wrong.

Dean's Plumbing is our top pick in Plano, Texas. The company does a bit of everything, offering great availability, 24/7 emergency plumbing, fair pricing and more. We were also impressed with the company's accountability, sending photos and bios of the plumber who will be serving the homeowner ahead of the call, so you know exactly who's coming to your door.

Legacy Plumbing Ace Hardware Home Services is our top alternative choice. The company has served the area for 20 years, and though it recently changed its name, the team has remained the same. With extremely impressive reviews and specialist services, it's a strong pick.

GPS Plumbing wowed us too. The team had excellent availability when we called, and the company does not charge a service fee. Altogether, it had the best pricing of any company we spoke to.

Dean's Plumbing is the best overall Plano plumbing company

A Dean's Plumbing truck parks in a driveway at a house call

Of all the excellent plumbing companies on this list, Dean's Plumbing had the most impressive gestalt. Positive from the first moments of our phone call, the company had great availability, fair pricing and reputable, safety-minded policies to help homeowners feel secure about whom they're ushering into their home. It's also family-owned and operated from Richardson, Texas, since 2008.

When we called to ask about a clogged drain, the company had excellent availability, providing us with time slots later that afternoon and as early as 9 a.m. the following morning. Before every house call, the company calls ahead, usually 30 minutes in advance. It also sends an image of the plumber who will be attending the house call, with a bit of background on their history with the company. This photo notification process ensures maximum accountability. All of its plumbers are fully background-checked and drug tested.

The company charges a $59 service call fee. However, this can be applied to the final price when you sign off on the quote. Estimates are furnished over email or in person before work begins. For a drain-clearing job, we were told that the price could start at $200 and go up from there, with intensive processes like hyrdo-jetting raising it significantly.

Services offered

  • Drains

  • 24/7 Emergency plumbing

  • Water heater maintenance

  • Water filtration

  • Water softeners

  • Gas lines

  • Pipe work

We asked if the company provides guarantees or warranties on its work. While the representative we spoke to said it doesn't usually offer formal guarantees for drain-clearing, they did say the company takes ownership of its work and will do its best to make sure the job gets done right. Outside of drains, the company offers generous warranties on other jobs: generally a one-year warranty for most work and a two-year warranty for customers who opt into their membership program. This program costs $14.95 per month and comes with a yearly inspection, providing a drain camera inspection, water heater inspection and more.

The company offers specials on its website, including a coupon for a $150 drain cabling job and $100 off water heater replacement. These specials can provide significant savings.

Dean's Plumbing is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating and two complaints on record. It has a 4.9-star rating on Google (872 reviews), a 4.4-star record on Yelp (122 reviews) and 4.5 stars on Angi (318 reviews). Dean's Plumbing is open 24/7.

I kid you not, if it wasn’t for Dillon and the the second tech (I can’t remember his name but man I really appreciate him too) who came over and fixed my gas leak I would have had no running gas during this winter storm!!! I am truly truly grateful for them. They did an excellent job, explained with detail what the issue was and how it was going to be resolved, and provided a break down of all the prices. They were here for 3 hours and made sure everything was ready to go for the inspection…. I will definitely be using this company again. Loved every bit of my experience!!! Thank you!!! 🙏🏼

Why they stand out

Providing excellent customer service, accountability through photos and bios of your attending plumber, savings and fair prices overall, it’s no surprise that Dean’s Plumbing is so well reviewed online. We were impressed with the whole package of this plumbing company. Dean’s Plumbing is an excellent pick for all types of plumbing work.

Pros

  • Fair pricing
  • Photos of attending plumbers
  • Specials
  • Good availability on our call

Legacy Plumbing Ace Hardware Home Services is our top alternative Plano plumber

Legacy Plumbing technicians are hard at work on a sewer project

Legacy Plumbing technicians are hard at work on a sewer project

Legacy Plumbing has been a mainstay plumbing company in the Plano area for about 20 years. Today, Legacy Plumbing has partnered with Ace Hardware, becoming Ace Hardware Home Services. While the name has changed, the team at Legacy Plumbing has stayed the same. At the time of writing, the company has a perfect five-star average on both Google and Angi, with over a thousand reviews on each — a truly impressive feat.

When we called in, we asked if the company could come out to fix a clogged drain. The company had good availability. The house we asked about was older, and the representative we spoke to told us that the company has a specialist who works on older sewers. This specialist was available two days out with two-hour windows throughout the day. Their regular drain technicians were available earlier. When you book a service window, technicians call 30 minutes ahead of arrival.

The company books appointments on weekdays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. It does not offer weekend service calls. That said, the office is open every day of the week and will respond to emergency calls on the weekend to either set up an appointment asap for the beginning of the week, or help refer dire cases to an emergency plumber that does work the weekend.

The company charges a $60 trip fee. We were told that most drain jobs would cost $197, with potential extra costs bringing the total price to a possible $362. Estimates are furnished as a PDF file, enabling homeowners to sign off on a device if they step out during the service call.

Services offered

  • Drain and sewer work

  • Gas plumbing

  • Water line servicing

  • Water heater maintenance

  • Fixture installation

The company does not furnish written guarantees on most drain work. However, main lines do come with 30-day guarantees. While simple drain snaking jobs might not be formally guaranteed, the representative we spoke to did tell us that if the problem comes back the following day after service, the company will handle the issue.

The representative we spoke to told us that not only are all its technicians background-checked, but all its plumbers are also fully licensed, not just apprentices. Apprentices may perform work on your job; however, they will be supervised.

The company offers deals on its webpage, including coupons like $115 off a water heater replacement and a free second opinion on and drain line estimate. This latter coupon is great for first-time customers who may have gotten an estimate that didn't feel right from a competitor company.

Legacy Plumbing Ace Hardware Home Services is accredited by the BBB with an A+ score and one complaint on record. The company has a five-star Google rating (1,953 reviews), a 4.8-star Yelp rating (515 reviews) and a five-star Angi rating (1,010 reviews).

Legacy Plumbing Ace Hardware Home Services is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends. However, representatives are available for scheduling from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

GPS Plumbing is our best value plumbing company

GPS Plumbing's team provides great availability and excellent prices

GPS Plumbing's team provides great availability and excellent prices

Among all the plumbing companies we called, GPS Plumbing had the best prices and availability. Founded by Master Plumber Steve Gestner in 2012, the Frisco-based company has amassed a truly stellar track record, with excellent scores across multiple review sites. When we called in, the representative on the phone said that the company has lots of integrity, and based on the reviews and policies, we believed her.

When we called in, the company had full availability that afternoon as well as the following two days. It provides customers with two-hour windows, then calls them beforehand to notify them it is on its way.

The representative we spoke to told us that most drain calls will cost from $175 to $250, with no service fee. This is the best price we were quoted by any company in this guide. If the homeowner isn't able to be there for the whole appointment, the company can send a secure payment gateway once the written estimate is accepted, then charge the card when the work is complete.

Services offered

  • Emergency plumbing

  • Drain work

  • Gas line service

  • Slab leak detection and repair

The company does not offer warranties or written guarantees for services, but the representative told us it stands by its work. The representative told us an anecdote about the company recently returning to a job site where a drain had become reclogged and recabling it free of charge.

GPS Plumbing conducts formal background checks on all its employees, many of whom have worked for the company for years.

GPS Plumbing is not accredited by the BBB , but it holds an A+ rating with the service. It has one complaint on file with the BBB. Rescue Air and Plumbing is our top alternative plumber with HVAC services

The Rescue Air and Plumbing assembles next to its fleet of trucks

The Rescue Air and Plumbing assembles next to its fleet of trucks

It's right in the name, Rescue Air and Plumbing might be a great plumbing company, but it's also more than that. The company works on HVAC systems like heating, filtration and air conditioning in addition to plumbing. The merger is the brainchild of Roger Wakefield, owner of the former Texas Green Plumbing, and the owners of Rescue Air: Michael Hirsh and Joshua L Campbell, forming Rescue Air and Plumbing.

Rescue Air and Plumbing does not share pricing over the phone. When we asked for a ballpark quote for the company to come out and clear a blocked drain, the representative declined to talk numbers but said the company charges a $79 service fee for estimators to come out.

The company generally provides 30-day guarantees on its work, but the rep we talked to told us that the guarantee or warranty for a drain job would depend on the condition of the drain, and the estimator would have to comment on this in person. This information will be furnished in the written estimate alongside pricing details, which may be shared in person or over PDF.

It had wide appointment availability when we called in. The company was available for service calls later that day and the following day. The company books with an open time frame. That means it will share a time window and alert customers about 30 minutes before arrival.

Services offered

  • Plumbing repairs

  • HVAC repairs

  • Emergency plumbing

  • Drains

  • Plumbing diagnostics

The company conducts formal background checks on all its plumbers and technicians. When you book, expect to receive a photo of the plumber who will be attending your appointment before they arrive, so you can identify them at the door.

On its website, Rescue Air and Plumbing provides attractive coupons. These include some significant savings, including free estimates (eliminating the $79 service charge), free second opinions and $50 off plumbing or furnace repairs.

Rescue Air and Plumbing is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating. However, it does have eight complaints on record, seven of which are unclosed. The company has a 4.9-star rating on Google (3,650 reviews), a 4.5-star rating on Yelp (598 reviews) and a 4.8-star rating on Angi (85 reviews). Rescue Air and Plumbing is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Why they stand out

Formed from the union of two noteworthy Richardson companies, Rescue Air and Plumbing is a great pick for all types of service calls, from 24/7 emergency plumbing and heating repairs to intensive maintenance and installations. The company’s reputation is apparent in its over 3,500 Google reviews, a testament to its quality.

Texas plumbing FAQs

How do I know if my water heater needs repairs or a full replacement?

Water heaters have a way of letting you know when things are going wrong. Often, when small issues arise, these fixtures provide reliable warning signs. These can include groaning sounds and bangs, as well as brown water.

Small issues don't always mean it's time for your water heater to retire, though. Often, these are fixable with repairs. However, some water heater problems are indeed fatal. If your unit ceases to provide hot water or springs leaks, then it's usually a sign that the whole water heater will need replacing .

How long does a water heater typically last in Texas?

According to The Home Depot , most water heaters last for six to 12 years, if properly maintained. As a rule of thumb, we generally expect a decade . That said, lower-quality water heaters may not perform as well. Invest in a high-quality water heater , and it will likely serve you longer.

One factor that can cause variations in the life expectancy of water heaters is the mineral content in the water in your region. In areas with mineral-heavy, "hard" water , mineral content can build up inside water heaters quickly.

What are the most common issues people call plumbers to fix?

Clogged drains are the most common complaint that causes people to call out plumbers. Light clogs might be easy enough to clear on one's own ; however, deep clogs can fully stop up drains in showers, bathroom sinks, and kitchens, and require drain snakes or augers.

Faulty water heaters and ceaselessly running toilets are two other common issues that often lead to plumber calls.

How can I tell if I can fix a plumbing issue myself or if I should call a pro?

While we applaud the DIY ethos, when it comes to plumbing, it's important to recognize that there are some tasks that should not be attempted oneself. Poorly executed plumbing not only risks harm to one's own home but can also endanger neighbors, through gas leaks and or water contamination. Plus, many plumbing jobs are illegal without proper permits and must be executed up to code .

For tasks that are fair game for the DIYer, online resources can help teach skills.

Is it better to go with a smaller plumbing company or a larger one?

At Yahoo Local, we generally make a point of highlighting great local businesses — it's kind of our MO. That said, we recognize that there are many circumstances in which a larger business could be the better pick. Larger businesses may have access to more expensive technical equipment and heavy machinery that is unavailable to smaller plumbing outfits.

Additionally, larger plumbing companies can often employ a larger staff. Sometimes this can translate to better availability. That said, there's no hard and fast rule in this. In the end, whether large or small, the best plumber for you will be the one who meets your specific plumbing needs.

Do plumbing companies in Plano need to be licensed?

From Plano to Luckenbach, plumbers must hold proper licensing. Plumbing companies are regulated by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). Plumber licenses come in tiers that correspond to different levels of skill, from apprentice to master plumber. These levels of licensing certify plumbers for different types of plumbing contracting and signify serious commitments to the plumbing trade.

Read our full guide to Texas plumbing licensing and regulations .

Do all reputable plumbers do background checks?

Background checks are an extremely common part of the plumbing industry. This is because plumbers work inside people's homes. In Texas, background checks aren't just common; they're required by law.

The TSBPE requires that all plumbers, from apprentices to inspectors, submit their fingerprints for criminal background checks to acquire a license.

Do plumbers usually charge by the hour or flat rate?

Plumbing services vary widely, from simple jobs unclogging drains to complex diagnostic work and fixture installations. Accordingly, payment policies vary about as widely as the jobs that plumbers perform.

While hourly rates are common, many other plumbers offer flat rates for different types of work. Many other plumbers use an estimate system , creating specific itemized quotes that address the scope and cost of work.

Should plumbers provide written estimates before beginning a job?

It's a good idea to seek a written estimate before plumbers begin work on your home. Region Energy , a New Jersey energy company, recommends that you always ask for a written estimate that includes quotes for parts and labor, and that you and the plumbing company sign off on the estimate before work commences, rather than accepting a quote over the phone.

Do plumbers usually offer warranties? And if so, what kind?

Plumbing guarantees and warranties can work in a few ways. When you hire a plumber to install a fixture like a faucet or a water heater, warranties can guarantee that the system continues to work for a given amount of time.

On the other hand, service guarantees are often more abstract. While many plumbing companies won't guarantee services like drain clearing, others will. Some of these guarantees might just stipulate that if the clog is back the next day, then the company will come back out to take another stab at the problem. Other guarantees might provide a 90-day clog-free window, with specific stipulations. For example, if a company pulls a wad of baby wipes out of a drain to unclog it, they might provide a guarantee for 30 days, but stipulate that the guarantee is null (and the homeowner will need to pay again) if they come back to unclog the drain a second time and find that it is once again full of baby wipes.
