Side Street Grill

A regular drinking-hole in Memphis's Overton Square, Side Street Grill is a great place to have a late-night drink or light snack. Especially so for tourists, as this place is quite light on the pocket. They serve speciality martinis that quite reflect the creativity of the brewer with some unconventional flavors on offer like wedding cake, chocolate- and-strawberry and so on. A few dinner items like steak are also served. The best thing to do here, however, is to gather a couple of friends and have a peaceful cigar and drink on the restaurant's patio in the balmy night.

Cupboard Restaurant

The eggplant casserole alone is reason enough to come here for lunch. Also on offer, though, are a number of plate lunch specials, with an emphasis on vegetable choices. There's a popular selection of desserts, as well, all served efficiently by the long-tenured wait staff. There's always a wait during lunch time at this down-home eatery, but the "community" table makes this a good dining spot for parties of one. Also try out the downtown location, known as "The Cupboard II," which can be found at 149 Madison Avenue.

Half Shell

Everything from seafood to burgers can be found on the menu at this casual East Memphis restaurant, which also features a friendly bar and attracts a large under-30 crowd. Order an icy margarita to sip while waiting for one of the seafood specialties to be brought to your table. If you're more the steak-and-potatoes type, try one of the hand-cut steaks. Reservations are recommended on the weekends at this popular eatery.

Capriccio Grill

This is the Peabody Hotel's second tier restaurant, after Chez Philippe. The setting is still elegant, and the food sophisticated—this is a place to linger over a meal with the well-dressed crowd. Service here is not as formal as at Chez Philippe, and sometimes has a very Southern, down-home flavor. The food is contemporary, with fusion elements. Local roots show in dishes such as Tennessee Persimmon Wood Smoked Chicken. Lunch offers salads and pasta dishes, and the homemade potato chips with blue-cheese dip draws locals back again and again. Desserts are irresistible. Try the Chocolate-Apricot Torte or the Sundried Cherry and Apricot Bread Pudding.

Otherlands

Otherlands Coffee Bar & Exotic Gifts is a fun place to have a snack, browse for gifts and enjoy yourself. Here you can relax, listen to music and have a cup of coffee. In the coffee bar you will find java, organic teas and homemade soups. The gift shop specializes in the works of local artists making it a great place to find an original gift. Local musicians perform here on Saturday evenings. The shop is easy to spot with its blue exterior and huge white-lettered name on the front.

Java Cabana

Before you go inside Java Cabana, stop and look at the window for a few minutes. Drop a few coins in the Elvis Impersonator's shrine to see what happens. After you have soaked in the memorabilia and hodge-podge collections, go inside for an experience right out of the beatnik era of the '50s and ‘60s. If you are lucky, you will be there for one of the frequent poetry readings by local writers, or some retro music played on acoustic guitar. Oh, yes—the coffee's pretty good, too. No alcoholic beverages served.

Automatic Slim's

Expect hip décor and great food at this restaurant, which serves up tasty Caribbean and Southwestern dishes. Sit at the bar and have one of the many flavors of martinis. The best seats, though, are by the window (with a view of the Peabody) and on the mezzanine. As for the food, the Voodoo Stew is a standout, with big chunks of seafood in a lusty sauce. Other specialties include the Coyote Chips—potato chips with a red pepper sauce—as well as the Coconut Mango Shrimp and the various polenta dishes. The lunch menu features large sandwiches such as salmon on sourdough bread.
