Emily and Matt Hyland opened their first restaurant, Emily, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, in 2014 with a simple goal: to create chef-inspired pies topped with ingredients they genuinely loved. A trip to visit friends in Detroit changed everything. They fell in love with the local pizza style, known for its crispy cheese edges, airy dough, and bold red sauce. Matt recognized that pairing this incredible foundation with chef-inspired toppings could create something truly special. Back in the basement of their Brooklyn shop, Matt began experimenting with organic flour, aged cheeses, fresh tomatoes, and countless topping combinations. From truffle and mushrooms to jalapeño and pepperoni, and pesto with Calabrian chilies, each pizza maintained the signature cheese-crusted edge that makes Detroit-style pizza so craveable. In 2016, after countless rounds of testing (and tasting), Emily and Matt introduced their take on Detroit-style pizza with the opening of Emmy Squared Pizza. Since then, Matt has continued to develop new toppings and recipes, remaining committed to crafting some of the most thoughtful and distinctive pizzas in the country.
