Southie
Southie is the more casual sister restaurant to the wildly popular Wood Tavern next door. Southie, named after the Boston neighborhood, bills itself as having an "East Coast mentality, West Coast sensibility. The specialty here is all things sandwiches, but not just your typical deli fare. At Southie, you're likely to find sandwiches like a Shaved Porchetta sandwich with Fennel, Avocado and Olive Puree and a Mustard Vinaigrette, or the "Spicy Hog" Pulled Pork sandwich with Pickled Jalapeños, Slaw, and Lime Aioli. There is also a small selection of soups and salads, along with desserts like Bacon Infused Chocolate Pudding. In the evenings, Southie switches from 'wiches to small plates like Fried Baby Artichokes, Sauteed Mussels with Chorizo, Ahi Tuna Panzanella Salad, and larger plates like Roasted Flat Iron Steak, Fresh Tagliatelle Carbonara, and of course a few of their signature sandwiches. Southie also has a selection of wines on tap and bottled beers.

Whether you're an Ethiopian food buff or a neophyte, Asmara will come as a pleasant surprise. The food is classic Ethiopian, with excellent tebsy (pan roasted strips of beef), ketfo (chopped beef tenderloin with cottage cheese), and, of course, the ubiquitous injera (a flat, spongy bread used to pick up food in lieu of silverware). The inside is quite dark, and, depending on your mood, that can be either oppressive or intimate. If you're inclined to feel gloomy, one way to flip the mood around is to order some delicious honey wine to go along with your meal. Great for an interesting date or an excursion with friends, Asmara is also ideal for a nice nutritional family meal, as the large portions and the novelty of the injera will keep the whole family happy.
alaMar's literal meaning is "to the sea". This specialty restaurant is headed by the culinary genius Chef Nelson German. Apart from seafood delicacies, the restaurant offers rotating gastronomic fare of artisanal sandwiches during lunch time and traditional Californian dishes for Sunday brunch. The full-service bar features excellent selection of local wines, beers, cocktails and sodas. Visit the website to book a table.
The fact that this down-home diner sits next to the produce market means that the lettuce and tomato on your juicy burger or the avocado in your omelette will be as fresh as it gets in an Oakland restaurant. The atmosphere is casual and the clientele is a mix of the working class and upscale professionals who have discovered the great food, huge portions and low prices to be found here. The pork chops with apple rings are a particular favorite with the lunch crowd and, in a foray into a more chi-chi cuisine, enormous dinner crepes are served after 5p and are delicious.
