Cotton and Rye on Habersham Street is an American restaurant that is immensely popular among the locals as a casual date destination. The restaurant fuses sophistication into soul food and serves high-quality American spirits and brews that blend in perfectly with the charming minimalist, contemporary ambiance of the dining space. The staff is known for their courteousness and prompt service, affording patrons flawless dining experiences. Cotton & Rye's menu is diverse yet uncluttered, featuring a selection of delectable appetizers, refreshing vegetarian options, and well-portioned mains. The Studded Carolina Trout, Pork Shank, and the Crispy Chicken Wings are some of the favorites from the menu.
While dining at Vic's on the River, you will be treated not only to good food, but also great views of the Savannah River and the ever-busy River Street. The menu offers you a host of traditional Southern dishes to pick from, leaving you spoiled for choice. Herb crusted salmon, crab stuffed with Georgia shrimp and Vic's meatloaf are some of the lunch entrées you can enjoy. There are also some great after-dinner martinis like the White Elephant with its Amarula African crème liqueur and Absolut vodka that you can relish. There are two rooms, the Dieter's Den and the Stoddard Room, that can be booked for private events. Pets are permitted on the outdoor patio.
Year after year, the New York style pizza at Vinnie Van Go Go's is voted best in Savannah. Offered whole or by the slice, the pizza here has a crisp, flavorful crust and can be piled high with your choice of fresh toppings. Indoor seating includes a few small tables and a counter with tall stools, but the best place to sit is outside on the patio. Even in colder weather, space heaters warm the outsides of patrons, while pizza warms the insides. Beer and wine available. Cash only.
The Boar's Head claims to be the oldest restaurant on River Street, and is located in a building that was once a cotton warehouse, like most of the buildings in the area. Exposed brick walls decorated with a collection of gold plates and hunting trophies create a cozy atmosphere. From a seat at the bar, or on the small patio, patrons can look out over River Street and the Savannah River. Kitchen specialties include crab cakes and she-crab soup, and the bar recommends Bumbo Punch, a special rum punch.
Originally a drugstore, in addition to being a restaurant as portrayed in the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this has been Savannah's favorite greasy spoon for nearly 100 years. Done up in a 1950s diner motif, the ambiance is as charming as the diverse local patronage. Substantial, affordable dinner entrees are provided, plus a menu of sandwiches and salads for lunch, but try to come for breakfast. Served all day on weekends, the breakfast item of choice is the Hoppel Poppel, a mad concoction of scrambled eggs, potatoes, salami and various unidentified objects.
