In 1978, founding owner, Mike Pfankuch opened “That Pizza Place,” with the goal of creating a space where families and friends of Carlsbad could gather as a community, eat good food, and create memories. Mike and his family went on to operate That Pizza Place for over 40 years. Known for community, great food, youth sports and family, That Pizza Place was beloved by many. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mike made the decision to close the doors to his restaurant. The devoted customer base, which spans generations, was devastated to see this special place close. When the four of us (long-time Carlsbad friends) learned of this news, we immediately decided we could not let this slice of Carlsbad history (and part of our own childhood history) end. There was only one thing to do…re-open That Pizza Place to ensure the heart and pride of Carlsbad would live on for generations to come. We made it our mission to keep That Pizza Place’s doors open, honoring original recipes and its support of the community and youth sports, and, of course, adding some new touches as well. The four of us have been friends for over four decades. Our childhood was spent at That Pizza Place. After playing Pop Warner games at Valley Junior High, baseball games at Chase Field, and football games at Carlsbad High School, we’d head to That Pizza Place with our teammates and families, of course, after taking a couple runs on “Cardboard Hill!” Which is the hill behind TPP.

It all starts with the dough. Made fresh daily, with no oil, no sugar, no high-fructose corn syrup and with filtered water to replicate the water back in New York. It is then hand tossed to create a crust that's authentic, thin and airy. We add our signature sauce, whole milk mozzarella and fresh, all-natural toppings and we're ready to bake the pie to perfection. Unlike the big pizza chains that mass-produce their pies through conveyor belt, assembly-line ovens, our pies are baked in brick ovens to create a crispy, slightly darker crust that our customers crave.
