Gary was born in Heidelberg, Germany and moved to the United States when he was very young. Most of his artistic training comes from family and private tutors. Gary got much of his inspiration from his grandfather Gerhard Brauer who was a popular local oil painter in Neustadt, Germany. Gary's mother also paints in oils and played an important part in Gary's development as an artist. Gary takes much of his inspiration from the classic German Portrait artists of the Renaissance, namely Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein along with the painters of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
