I buy, sell and consign luxury watches. Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Omega, Panerai, and the other pieces collectors actually want. Most people come to me because they own a watch and want to know what it is really worth. I look at it, tell you what it is, and make an offer. Box and papers help, but they are not required. If consigning would get you a better number than selling outright, I will tell you that, even though it pays me less up front. On the buying side, I sell from my own inventory and I describe condition honestly, including the wear a listing photo hides. If I do not have the reference you are after, I will look for it. Watches are the only thing I do. That is the whole difference. A generalist has to guess at whether a dial is original or a service replacement, or where a particular reference is trading this month. Knowing those things is the job, and it is the reason a fair number ends up being a higher number than people expect. Whether you are selling one watch you inherited or building out a collection, you will get a straight answer either way.
