The best roofing company in Richmond for YOU

Whether you're looking for a full shingle reroof or you need light repairs, there are a lot of factors to consider when you pick a roofing company. When you call a potential roofer, it's a good idea to have a few questions prepared. You'll want to approach the call with an idea of what you want and when. Roofing companies often keep tight schedules, especially in the prime roofing months between spring and autumn. Make sure the roofer you're interested in is available when you need the job done.

Make your budget and payment structure a central part of your call. If a roofer gives you a quote that seems high, go ahead and get a quote from another company as well. You'll also want to get a clear picture of the warranties your roofer provides.

Davidson Roofing Company works on a historic home

Founder George Davidson started Davidson Roofing Company in 2005. The family business has since grown to a large operation with 14 full-time employees. The company prides itself on excellence; it is both a GAF Factory Certified Master Elite installer and a CertainTeed Select Shingle Master contractor. (Check out our guide to roofing certifications for details on what that means.)

When we spoke to a representative from Davidson Roofing Company, they told us that it offers multiple roofing services, including shingles, slate and solar roofing. The company provides repairs on other types of roofs, from copper to flat roofs.

Depending on the shingles you choose, Davidson Roofing Company offers a few different manufacturer warranties, including a GAF Gold Pledge warranty that lasts up to 25 years and a President's Club warranty that will guarantee high-end shingles for up to 40 years. Additionally, the company provides a five-year workmanship warranty that ensures it will come out and fix any defects in your roof due to installation issues.

Services offered

  • Roof replacements

  • Roof repairs

  • Roof installations

  • Commercial roofing

  • Solar roofing

Davidson Roofing Company does not charge a down payment. Instead, the full bill will be due when your project is completed. While this bill should reflect the quote you received during your estimate, the representative we spoke to told us that unforeseen decking issues can require more wood than expected, which will raise the price above the quote.

If you'd prefer not to pay with check or cash, the company charges a 3% credit card fee. It also offers two financing plans via its partners. More financing information can be found on its website. The representative we spoke to declined to provide a ballpark estimate over the phone.

While most jobs are completed in one or two days, larger homes may take longer. Generally, the company will arrange for a dumpster to be dropped off with the materials on the first day of the job. Once work and the first clean-up cycle have finished, a technician will come around with a magnet and sweep the yard for lost hardware. If a surprise storm appears, the company will bump your job back to the next dry day.

Davidson Roofing Company employs a team of regular employees. While the representative we spoke to didn't confirm that all employees are background-checked, they did assure us of the professionalism of the team. On its website, the company details how it invests in its employees' education and how it funds charitable causes in the Richmond area.

Davidson Roofing has a 4.7-star score on Google (142 reviews), a 4.5-star score on Yelp (16 reviews), and a 4.8-star rating on Angi (103 reviews). It is BBB-accredited , with an A+ rating and zero complaints.

The company is located at 3131 Southside Ave, Henrico, Va., 23228. It is open Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. For a free estimate, call 804-672-05401 or visit its website .

Virginia roofing FAQs

How much does the average roof replacement cost in Virginia?

While different regions vary in how much a roof costs, our research found that the national average runs between $7,500 and $23,000. Virginia should fall comfortably within the lower end of this range.

Bubba from BK Roofing says that Richmond homes that would have cost between $8,000 and $10,000 just a few years ago now often cost $10,000 to $15,000 due to inflation. On the other hand, Amor Roofing in Yorktown, Va. writes that the average roof in Virginia can cost between $5,000 and $20,000.

The size of your roof and the materials you choose will be the largest factors that affect the cost of a reroof. However, the complexity of the roof and details like skylights can also increase the price.

How do I know if my roof needs repairs or a full replacement?

An informed eye can often tell when a roof needs repairs. Missing shingles, leaks and obvious damage from storms are all signs that a roof needs work. However, whether you need a whole new roof may not be apparent without more investigation.

A trained roofer will not only assess the state of a roof's shingles or top layer, but will usually look for structural damage in the roof's decking and support.

It's a good idea to prepare for hurricanes and other major storms, but sometimes damage happens regardless. Severe storms are a good excuse to schedule a roof inspection. If your roof was damaged in a storm, there's a chance that your home insurance will help pay for repairs.

Are there roofing regulations or permits required in Virginia?

The Commonwealth of Virginia has its own roofing regulations and applicable laws. Make sure your roofer follows these laws to a tee. It's important to ensure that your roofer is correctly certified to do business in Virginia and that they pull any necessary permits.

Read our full guide to Virginia roofing licensing and regulations for details.

How long does a roof typically last in Virginia?

The lifespan of a roof depends on several factors, including local climate conditions and the type of materials used. In Virginia, asphalt shingle roofs typically last about 20 to 30 years, similar to their lifespan in most regions. However, higher-quality shingles can extend well beyond this range.

For homeowners looking for durability, premium options such as slate, tile and metal are worth consideration. These materials often deliver exceptional longevity, lasting 40 years or more, and in some cases, more than a century.

What is the best time of year to replace a roof in Virginia?

In the upper portion of the American South, Virginia is a state with distinct seasons, including hot summers, cold winters and leafy falls.

Generally, spring, summer and autumn bring the most ideal roofing weather. Summer's thunderstorms can throw a wrench in otherwise idyllic days, but the season still has good roofing weather.

Cold, wet winter days can be more problematic for scheduling a reroof. However, just because the weather isn't perfect doesn't mean roof problems won't arise. Thankfully, many of the best roofers in Richmond happily take on roof repairs in the winter months.
