JM Construction Group got its start in 2002, when founder Justin Swanson moved on from his commercial roofing job to begin his own company. Focusing on roofing, siding and gutters, the company operates throughout Northern Illinois and into Wisconsin. Swanson's motto, "quality construction, honest service and great value," drives everything the company does, earning it the reputation to take the top spot as our best Rockford roofer.

The representative we spoke to said a down payment is typically required for roof replacements, but the exact amount depends on the materials you choose. Typical down payment amounts in the industry range between 20% and 50%. The company provides a one-year workmanship warranty, which isn't the longest you'll see from roofers, but it should be long enough to catch any issues related to the installation. The length of the material warranty, which covers manufacturing defects, depends on the system you choose
If your roof replacement is delayed due to weather, JM Construction Group will move it to the next dry day. The company also takes care to keep debris cleaned up throughout the job and sweeps for nails with a magnet. For payment, financing is available, but the company also accepts checks and credit or debit cards. There's a 3% transaction fee added for card payments.
JM Construction Group is a BBB-accredited company that holds an A+ rating with no registered complaints. It also has a 4.7-star rating on Google (75 reviews), three stars on Yelp (two reviews) and 4.6 stars on Angi (21 reviews). The company representative we spoke to said it uses a mix of in-house employees and subcontractors, but couldn't confirm if they're background-checked.
The company's Rockford office is located at 4915 Auburn St., Rockford, Ill., 61101. It's open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week, including weekends. You can call 815-315-4388 or visit its website to schedule an estimate.
Customer testimonial
We were in need of a new roof. A friend referred us to Brian. After meeting with him and seeing the options available, we chose a steel roof. The crew arrived at 7am and began removing the old shingles. They worked continuously and by 4pm the new roof was completely done, with the entire area around the house cleaned up. Would definitely recommend. - Chris W., Google reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Illinois roofing FAQs
How much does the average roof replacement cost in Illinois?
According to Greater Midwest Exteriors , a roofing company based in Chicago, the average cost of an asphalt shingle roof in Illinois is between $9,000 and $15,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home. The cost of a roof replacement can vary a lot based on its size, complexity and the material you choose. Expect more premium materials, like metal or tile, to cost north of $20,000.
How do I know if my roof needs repairs or a full replacement?
It's not always easy to tell if you need a simple repair or a full roof replacement, which is why it's a good idea to hire an experienced contractor for an inspection. Roofs that have significant sagging, granule loss or lots of missing shingles and leaks likely need a full replacement. If you only have a few missing shingles or small leaks, you might be able to get away with a repair.
To get a better handle on what your roof needs, read our guide to signs your roof needs repairs or a replacement .
Are there roofing regulations or permits required in Illinois?
Whether you need a permit or not for a roof replacement or repair depends on the regulations in your specific town or city. However, Illinois tightly regulates roofing contractors and requires them to obtain a license to perform work for hire. Always ensure the roofing company you're working with is properly licensed and insured. Read our guide to Illinois roofing company licensing and regulations for more.
How long does a roof typically last in Illinois?
According to Global Exterior Experts , an Aurora-based roofer, you can expect the typical asphalt shingle roof to last around 20 years or more in Illinois. More premium materials, such as metal, can last much longer, potentially up to 70 years or more. If you're trying to decide on a material, check out our guide to roof lifespans by material .
What is the best time of year to replace a roof in Illinois?
Illinois experiences all four seasons, though winter is a little less pronounced in the southern end of the state. That means the seasons can have a big effect on when you choose to replace your roof. According to Sundown Exteriors , a roofer based in Bloomington, Ill., fall is the best time to replace a roof because of its mild temperatures and lower humidity. Summer is a close second, though intense heat and humidity can cause projects to take longer.
