Spanning more than 47,000 square miles (121,729 square kilometers) across the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri, Ozark Mountains encompass a spectacular forested terrain with breathtaking scenery. One of the most prominent features of the South, the expansive mountain region is dominated by expanses of the plateaus of Salem and Springfield. Evidence of the region's long geological history can be found in the simple composition of the rocks that consist of grey dolomites sitting atop rhyolites. The area saw a large boom in trade and mining by French settlers and continues to be an important player in the South's Lead Belt region.
