Now part of the Channel Islands National Park, the Santa Rosa Island is one of the most remote of the northern Channel Islands. It was once home of the rare mammoth and today it is home to a grove of the rare Torrey Pine. There are only two naturally occurring groves of Torrey Pines in the world. One at Santa Rosa Island and the other at La Jolla, California, 175 miles (280 kilometers) away. On reaching the island, the grove is accessible by an easy hike and there are other rare plants and species of trees to admire that are not found anywhere else in the world. Tourists can enjoy hiking on several trails along with outstanding photographic opportunities.
