The Williams Companies, through its subsidiaries, finds, produces, gathers, processes and transports natural gas. The company also manages a wholesale power business. Its operations are concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Gulf Coast, Southern California and Eastern Seaboard. The Williams Companies was started 1908, when the Williams brothers began a construction company. It expanded into one of the world's largest pipeline engineering and construction firms. The company operates nearly 14,600 miles of interstate natural gas pipeline, and delivers nearly 12 percent of the natural gas consumed in United States. Steven J. Malcolm has been the chief executive officer of Williams Companies for more than four years. He has been with the utility company for over 22 years. Malcolm earned a BSCE degree from the University of Missouri Rolla. The Williams Companies purchased Transco Energy Company in 1995, expanding its natural gas transportation system to the East Coast. It also acquired Barrett Resources in 2001.
