On Alabama football 's second-to-last offensive possession, in a 24-17 loss to Tennessee last Saturday, Crimson Tide WR Kendrick Law incurred a 15-yard penalty on an after-the-whistle personal foul when he shoved Volunteers DB Boo Carter . Law had just been targeted by QB Jalen Milroe on a pass that was thrown behind Law and fell incomplete, setting up a fourth-and-7 situation with Tennessee leading 21-17 and under two minutes remaining.
The penalty moved the ball back to Alabama 's 18-yard line to set up a nearly impossible fourth-and-22, and the Crimson Tide was unable to convert on a 13-yard pass to Justice Haynes .
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer addressed Law's penalty on Monday.
"The message continues to be with the team, it's not just one. We've got to learn from those moments. Those moments are big. Our choices, our decisions, our words, our actions, all those things. They have to be focused on what's best for our team. Obviously in that moment, we're fighting to try and find a way to win and it's a big moment. We've got to make we, of course address it, but we can't continue to have the mistakes ... we've got to make sure that if someone's talking to us, we've got to learn to walk the other way, and be more emotionally disciplined in every facet."
After the incompletion, Carter got in Law's face with what appeared to be a taunt. A flag could have been thrown on Carter as well, but when it comes to post-whistle skirmishes, like Law and Carter got into, officials often only see retaliation rather than an initial flag-worthy action.
Law returned to Alabama's lineup from injury against Tennessee and caught four passes for 37 yards. The Crimson Tide will play host to Missouri this Saturday on Alabama Homecoming at 2:30 p.m. CT (ABC).
