- Can Alabama football still make the SEC championship game? Where Crimson Tide stands in SEC
The common refrain throughout the Alabama football program at the end of October is that every single one of the team's goals remain intact.
Yes, the Crimson Tide have losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee . But every SEC team but one — Texas A&M — has at least one blemish in conference play. Alabama is one of six SEC teams with two conference losses along with Arkansas , Florida , Ole Miss , Missouri and Vanderbilt, and sit behind the Aggies , Georgia, LSU , Tennessee and Texas.
While the attention is seemingly on Alabama's ability to get a spot in the College Football Playoff spot, a place in the SEC Championship game, while less likely, is still on the table.
Here is where Alabama stands in the SEC race with games against LSU, Mercer, Oklahoma and Auburn left on the schedule.
Texas A&M (7-1 overall, 5-0 in SEC)
Georgia (6-1, 4-1)
LSU (6-2, 3-1)
Tennessee (6-1, 3-1)
Texas (7-1, 3-1)
Alabama (6-2, 3-2)
Arkansas (5-3, 3-2)
Florida (4-3, 2-2)
Ole Miss (6-2, 2-2)
Missouri (6-2, 2-2)
Vanderbilt (5-3, 2-2)
South Carolina (4-3, 2-3)
Auburn (3-5, 1-4)
Oklahoma (4-4, 1-4)
Kentucky (3-5, 1-5)
Mississippi State (1-7, 0-5)
The two SEC teams with the best conference records will compete for a conference championship Dec. 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta after the conference eliminated divisions before the season.
In the event of a tie, the SEC will use the following rules to determine participants in the conference championship game.
Head-to-head competition among the tied teams
Record vs. all common conference opponents among the tied teams
Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among the tied teams
Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams
Capped relative total scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams
Random draw of the tied teams
If two teams are tied for first place, both will qualify for the championship. The tiebreaker will be used to determine the home team.
According to BetMGM, Alabama has +3000 odds to win the SEC behind Georgia (+200), Texas (+200), Texas A&M (+400), LSU (+700) and Tennessee (+900).
According to BetMGM, Alabama has -105 odds to make the expanded CFP in 2024, one of five SEC teams designated as favorites along with Georgia (-1600), Texas (-900), Tennessee (-175) and Texas A&M (-105).
