BIRMINGHAM — Alabama softball signee Gerritt Griggs will come to Tuscaloosa as a state champion, but not in the sport she is coming to play for the Crimson Tide .
Griggs, playing quarterback for Central-Phenix City's flag football team, helped lead the Red Devils to a Class 6A/7A state title on Wednesday at the AHSAA Super 7 state championships as Central-Phenix City took down Spain Park 55-7 to hoist its first Blue Map trophy. In the win, Griggs threw for 253 yards and six touchdowns, rushing for another 38 yards and an additional touchdown.
"A blessing this has been to come to our school," Griggs said postgame. "We are grateful for this opportunity and feel so blessed"
Griggs did not begin playing flag football until three years ago. It did not take her or her Red Devils teammates long to find success, with Central-Phenix City currently sitting atop the USA Today Sports National Flag Football rankings .
Griggs is tabbed as the No. 9 infielder in the 2025 class per Extra Inning Softball and is the No. 25 player overall in the class. She signed to play with the Crimson Tide on Nov. 13, having been committed since Sept. 25, 2023. She is one of six signees within Alabama softball's 2025 class.
"I've been an Alabama fan my whole life," Griggs said. "It was something that when Sept. 1 hit I didn't know what my options were. When (my Alabama offer) came, I was really excited. I went on a couple of visits and then when I went to Alabama it was like back home."
Griggs had the opportunity to play on the campus of her future home in last year's AHSAA Super 7 Championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium. There, the Red Devils took down Vestavia Hills 25-0.
"It was so special," Griggs said. "I never thought I was going to be able to play at Bryant-Denny for flag football. I never even thought I'd be playing flag football. To play at the school I was going to, it was like a dream come true."
Griggs will join Alabama softball next fall ahead of the 2026 season.
