With the Pittsburgh Steelers in the market for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft , Steelers Now will be taking stock of the draft class every week of the 2025 college football season.
STOCK UP: John Mateer, Oklahoma
Mateer is a roller coaster this season. After having a stock hit a couple times this season, he managed to lead Oklahoma to a victory over ranked SEC-foe Missouri. It wasn't always pretty, but he put the team on his shoulders.
Despite throwing for less than 50% completion rate, Mateer threw the team's only two scores. Couple that with carrying the ball 18 times and you have a signal caller who battled throughout the game.
To Mateer's credit, he has gutted out his hand injury and led his team to victories. It is a long way until the draft. His biggest opportunity to boost his stock will come in the postseason as Oklahoma could punch their ticket into the playoffs soon.
MDDB Ranking:
Week 13, No. 70, QB8
Season Stats: 198-of-318 (62.3% comp. rate), 2260 yards (7.9 yards/attempt), 10 TD, 7 INT
STOCK DOWN: Ty Simpson , Alabama
Simpson might have ultimately led the Crimson Tide to a victory, but don't be fooled by the score board. His performance was ugly. A week after getting tested by the Oklahoma defense, Simpson appeared to be back down to Earth against Eastern Illinois.
He didn't eclipse the 200-yard mark, didn't record a score, and threw two interceptions. He also recorded his lowest QBR since week one. While his whole body of work has been impressive this season, the last two weeks are a little concerning.
Next week will be very intriguing and could be a huge test. The Auburn Tigers will host their hated rivals with not only a chance to make themselves bowl eligible… but spoil Alabama's postseason bid. Things get hectic down in the plains…
MDDB Ranking:
Week 13, No. 4, QB2
Season Stats: 237-of-354 (67% comp. rate), 2934 yards (8.3 yards/attempt), 22 TD, 4 INT
WORTH NOTING: Jayden Maiava vs Dante Moore
This game is the game the Steelers reportedly got a close look at both of these on-the-rise prospects. Though the Oregon Ducks came away with a 42-27 victory, Maiava showed why he is a rising prospect.
With three touchdowns and over 300 yards passing, Maiava could be a dark horse Steelers first-round pick. Moore's performance also impressed with a completion rate north of 70% and a pair of touchdown throws.
Could the Steelers have watched one of their future quarterbacks in this one?
STOCK UP: Cade Klubnik , Clemson
In what will likely be Klubnik's final home game at Clemson, the senior quarterback rewarded the Clemson faithful. The Tigers supplanted Furman in a decisive 45-10 victory.
Klubnik continued his stock resurgence by throwing two touchdowns and over 10 yards per attempt. The former five-star quarterback has bounced back from a dreadful start to the season.
With potentially two more games left, Klubnik likely is headed for the draft. His career high in completion percentage and resilience will give teams something to look forward to in their interviews. Will the Steelers be included in his scouting?
MDDB Ranking:
Week 13, No. 65, QB7
Season Stats: 211-of-314 (67.2% comp. rate), 2482 yards (7.9 yards/attempt), 16 TD, 5 INT
STOCK UP: Carson Beck , Miami (FL)
In retrospect, a majority of Beck's turnovers have come from the team's only two losses. Even then, the Hurricanes lost both games by six points or less. Since their last loss, Beck has returned to form.
On Saturday, Beck threw four touchdowns, over 300 yards, and nearly an 85% completion rate. He also recorded his highest QBR of the season. He may not be in the first-round conversation come April. However, he may be doing enough to become a day two pick.
The Georgia transfer may be able to sneak his team into the playoffs with a win in Pittsburgh next week. Will the Steelers attend this ACC show down?
MDDB Ranking:
Week 13, No. 124, QB12
Season Stats: 240-of-323 (74.3% comp. rate), 2805 yards (8.7 yards/attempt), 22 TD, 9 INT
STOCK DOWN: Beau Pribula, Missouri
At one point, Penn State fans were wondering if the wrong quarterback might have transferred out. After the UMass game, I think it is safe to say they let the right one walk.
Pribula the last four games has thrown only two touchdowns. To make matters worse, he has thrown six interceptions during that time span. It hasn't been an ideal year.
Pribula looked across the sideline and saw a fellow-transfer quarterback play well enough to win. Though it hasn't gone the way Mateer has hoped, he is playing through an injury and willing his team to win.
Maybe Pribula will be on the move again in 2026 as the draft doesn't seem like a strong option currently.
MDDB Ranking:
Week 13, No. 553, QB34
Season Stats: 178-of-263 (67.7% comp. rate), 1916 yards (7.3 yards/attempt), 11 TD, 9 INT
