On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the team had agreed to terms with veteran free agent safety Jabrill Peppers and would be signing him. The news broke about the Peppers signing just after it was being reported that safety DeShon Elliott would miss at least two games with a sprained MCL he suffered last week during the New York Jets .
Here are three things the signing of Peppers could mean for the Steelers.
Elliott is missing more than two games
If Elliott is really only going to miss two games, the Steelers might be able to just tread water without signing Peppers. But if depth was a worry, why wasn't Peppers already on the team? This signing could mean Pittsburgh is bracing for being without its best safety through the Week Four bye week.
It's not Sebastian Castro 's time yet.
We have to admit, when Elliott went down, we did wonder if it might mean the Steelers would call up rookie Sebastian Castro to be the backup to Chuck Clark . Alas, the addition of Peppers likely means Castro will remain on the practice squad.
The team can't afford to move Jalen Ramsey over
All we heard when the Steelers traded for Jalen Ramsey was his position versatility. However, the one snag in that plan is just how thin the Steelers already are at cornerback. Even if Ramsey were the best option to move over to safety, the team just doesn't have enough quality cornerbacks to make it happen.
