The Pittsburgh Steelers' preseason finale is just around the corner — which means final roster cuts are bound to follow.
In what has been nothing short of an incredibly exciting Steelers offseason, several talented players on offense, defense, and special teams find themselves as possible trade candidates following the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers . With that in mind, here are four Steelers who fit this bill to a tee.
QB Skylar Thompson
The best ability is availability — right? Skylar Thompson stepped up admirably in rookie QB Will Howard 's absence following his broken finger, but even three consecutive strong performances this preseason may not be enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. If placing Howard on IR for the season is out of the question, why not trade Thompson for a Day 3 pick?
P Corliss Waitman
The Pittsburgh Steelers could theoretically replicate a 2015 trade by retaining the winner of Corliss Waitman vs. Cameron Johnston — who are neck-and-neck in a punting positional battle. Almost 10 years ago, Pittsburgh traded P Brad Wing to the Giants in exchange for a seventh-round pick, opting to keep P Jordan Berry as the starter. While it could go either way this season, my money is on Johnston getting the starting nod and Waitman ultimately being traded.
CB James Pierre
Pierre has been a steady and reliable presence as both CB depth and on special teams — occasionally starting when his number is called. Pierre's presence on defense isn't nearly as impactful after the Steelers overhauled their secondary this offseason, however. If Pittsburgh chooses to retain the promising but oft-injured CB Cory Trice over Pierre, a trade wouldn't be the worst scenario in the world.
LB Cole Holcomb
Holcomb's preseason resurgence was nothing short of spectacular — showcasing he still has what it takes to be an elite starter in the NFL. Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson , however, are equally talented and may get the starting nod over Holcomb. With the solid depth options of Malik Harrison and Mark Robinson's impact on special teams, Holcomb could be the odd man out in Pittsburgh — leaving the Steelers to get the most value they can out of the talented linebacker.
