- Alabama football's Kalen DeBoer on QB Ty Simpson, 'He's got to get rid of it'
Opposing pass rushers have had success stripping the ball away from Alabama football QB Ty Simpson of late, but until Saturday, it hasn't cost the Crimson Tide a game.
That argument can be made now, however, after a sack-fumble on Simpson resulted in a second-half field goal for Oklahoma in a game that was ultimately decided by less than a field goal, 23-21. Sooners defensive lineman Taylor Wein knocked a ball loose from Simpson late in the third quarter, setting up OU kicker Tate Sandell for what proved to be the game-winning points.
It marked the fifth consecutive game that Simpson has fumbled on a sack, with the first coming at Missouri on Oct. 11.
"With the pressure they brought, he's got to get rid of it and be OK with throwing it away. You can only hold on so long, and I feel like with the blitz they had, you're going to get overwhelmed and outnumbered," UA coach Kalen DeBoer said of Simpson. "You've just got to understand the situation. I know it's third down and he wants to stay on the field, but you've just got to understand the defense is playing good, too, and you've got to live with punting once in a while."
Simpson didn't disagree but was a lot more succinct when asked the same question.
"Just get the ball out," he said. "Throw it away."
The turnover was one of three for Alabama , along with a costly interception that went for a pick-six and a fumble on a punt return by sophomore Ryan Williams . Those three plays led directly to 17 OU points and staked the Sooners to victory despite their offense generating only 212 yards.
