It's rare enough for a running back to keep playing in the NFL once they turn 30, let alone once they reach their mid-30s. But while one Pro Bowler managed to fend off Father Time for a while, his time to hang up the cleats has come.
On Thursday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that running back Latavius Murray is retiring. The former sixth-round pick and 2015 Pro Bowler is calling it a career after failing to find a team for this season or the last one.
"Veteran RB Latavius Murray is retiring from the NFL. Former 6th-round pick finished his career with over 8,000 yards and 61 TDs -- and was highly respected by coaches and players..." Schultz wrote on X.
Murray earned all-conference honors at UCF in 2012 and was drafted in the sixth round by the Oakland Raiders in the 2013 NFL Draft. After missing his rookie season with an injury, he emerged as a solid dual-threat option for them the following year and enjoyed the best season of his career the year after.
In 2015, Murray recorded nearly 1,300 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns, earning the first and only Pro Bowl selection of his career. The following year he scored a career-high 12 touchdowns for the team and helped them end a 14-year playoff drought.
In 2017, he signed a deal with the Minnesota Vikings but quickly lost his standing and then his job at the hands of then-rookie Dalvin Cook . He had over 900 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns that year but would not match either of those numbers again.
Over the next six seasons he would bounce around the league, playing for four different teams - the New Orleans Saints , Baltimore Ravens , Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills - and reaching the playoffs several times.

Murray finished his career with 6,552 rushing yards and 59 rushing touchdowns and a total of 8,172 yards from scrimmage plus two more receiving touchdowns.
Fans on X have been showing their respects to Murray for his superb career:
"(Latavius Murray) your run against KC at the Coliseum still fills my silver and black heart. Thanks for everything Tay train. Enjoy retirement bro," one user wrote.
"Really great career for a 6th rounder. 8000 and 60+ touchdowns has to rank him pretty high all time for 6th rounder or later RBs," wrote another.
"I will forever love this man for winning me $10K in Week 18 of 2022," a third replied.
"61st all time in rushing TD and 83rd in rushing yards. That's pretty great for a 6th round pick. Go UCF!"
We wish him all the best on his future endeavors.
