Texas Tech started a trend in the Big 12 Conference , and now the rest of the league will follow the Red Raiders ' lead.
The Big 12 announced Wednesday that, starting this season, all conference schools will provide player availability reports for football and men's and women's basketball. The conference clarified the wording of its original news release, telling the Avalanche-Journal that the reports — which are essentially injury reports — will be instituted only for league games and are not required for non-conference games.
Texas Tech provided these injury reports for football and men's basketball last season. For football, the Red Raiders' injury report could be found each week in the game notes, while men's basketball sent availability reports via email shortly before tip-off of games on an as-needed basis.
According to the news release, all reports will be posted exclusively on Big12Sports.com, with the final reports leading up to a game required to be updated 90 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Football teams must submit daily reports starting three days before each game. Football player designations can be listed as available, probable, questionable, doubtful, or out.
Basketball teams will update their availability reports the night before games, with players able to be designated as available, game-time decision, or out.
The Big Ten and Southeastern Conferences each have availability reports, with the Big 12 the latest to follow suit. Most look to the expansive growth of legalized gambling as one of the major factors for leagues instituting these reports.
