All Monday night eyes in the sports world fixated on UNC football , as it hosted TCU in Bill Belichick's highly-anticipated, collegiate coaching debut.
North Carolina started Monday's game with an exciting 7-play, 83-yard drive capped off by a Caleb Hood touchdown. The Tar Heels played well defensively on TCU's ensuing drive, then momentum quickly shifted.
UNC lost, 48-14 , in a shocking effort that left many surprised and defeated. Granted, Monday was North Carolina's (0-1) first 2025 game, but created plenty of potential concerns throughout the fall.
The Tar Heels have a quick turnaround for Week 2, as they travel to Charlotte for Week 2. During media availability Monday night , Belichick spoke about what UNC needs to do in preparation for the 49ers, but also highlighted how self-inflicted wounds have to be corrected first.
"The biggest thing is we have to correct some of the mistakes we made tonight," Belichick said. "We just can't perform well doing some of the things we did. We gotta be better than that. Obviously, we gotta deal with Charlotte and the problems they present. We had too many self-inflicted wounds that we have to eliminate before we can even worry about addressing our opponent. We'll start with that and then move to Charlotte."
North Carolina's first-half offense was non-existent after its opening drive. The Tar Heels allowed 258 rushing yards throughout the game, including a 75-yard Kevorian Barnes rushing touchdown, on the second half's first play from scrimmage. Horned Frogs (1-0) quarterback Josh Hoover had his way with the UNC defense, completing 27 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns, including 136 yards and a score to 1,000-yard Idaho transfer Jordan Dwyer.
Charlotte finds itself in a similar spot to North Carolina, playing subpar football in its own Week 1 loss, a 34-11 showing against App State.
Can the Tar Heels quickly pivot, in just a few days, to respond in dominant fashion against a 49ers team it controlled in Week 2 last season?
