Bill Belichick named amongst top storylines for 2025 college football season
The 2025 college football season is just a few months away – and there's already plenty of anticipation surrounding the North Carolina Tar Heels .
UNC, wanting a change in its football leadership, fired Mack Brown upon conclusion of its 2024 season. It didn't take North Carolina long to find a new head coach, landing upon 8-time Super Bowl winner Bill Belichick , which came as a surprise to many.
Despite his extensive success in the NFL, Belichick is a first-time coach at the college level. There were questions if Belichick's coaching style would adapt to a different level, particularly surrounding his ability to recruit, but Belichick quickly showed he's acing the recruiting trail.
Heading into the 2025 college football season, ESPN named Belichick coaching the Tar Heels its top, must-know storyline.
"Let's try to set aside the sideshow that is Bill Belichick's personal life and return our attention to why anyone is fascinated with him in the first place," ESPN's Kyle Bonagura wrote. "Arguably the greatest football coach who has ever lived, a man who won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots but has never coached at the college level, will begin his reign at North Carolina. There have been all sorts of outside-the-box coaching experiments in recent years, but this one -- strictly from a football standpoint -- might be the most interesting. His arrival in Chapel Hill comes with so many questions. Can he relate to college-aged players? Does his style translate to the college level? How long will he stay? But they really all boil down to one: Will he win? The last time North Carolina won a conference title (1980), the millennial generation had yet to arrive."
Year One of the Belichick era in Chapel Hill will kick off Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m., when UNC hosts the TCU Horned Frogs under the Kenan Stadium lights. This opener will be a great, early-season test for North Carolina, which hopes for a return to ACC relevancy.
