The North Carolina Tar Heels will kick off the Bill Belichick era on Labor Day, facing off against TCU in primetime with the whole nation watching. And when they do, it will officially be Gio Lopez as the starting quarterback.
Belichick made the announcement during Wednesday's press conference just a few days ahead of the game on Monday. It's really no secret that Lopez was named the starter as he's been the lead quarterback in drills all offseason and training camp. Belichick and the coaching staff waited until game week to announce the decision as they were in no hurry to name the starter.
Max Johnson will serve as the primary backup to Lopez while true freshmen Bryce Baker and Au'Tori Newkirk will be behind Johnson.
Lopez transferred from South Alabama to North Carolina this offseason and is coming off a 2024 season in which he threw for 18 touchdowns and ran for seven. He was responsible for 274.7 yards of total offense last season and is considered a dual-threat quarterback.
