Through four games, North Carolina Tar Heels starting quarterback Gio Lopez has thrown for just 430 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. He has a 62.7 completion percentage on 42 completions. In that stretch, he had two inflating games as well against Charlotte and an FCS school in Richmond.
In the two harder games of the team's season, Lopez has left with injury in the third quarter. Max Johnson , who was his replacement in Week 1 and again in Week 4, has 170 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions in just over half a game in total play time. The ex-Texas A&M quarterback has proven more successful in the time on the field than Lopez has.
It's time for Bill Belichick and the UNC football team to move on from the South Alabama transfer.
Following the Week 4 loss, Belichick was asked what he thought of Johnson's play and if there could be a potential change. He offered up a simple yet very expected answer.
"A lot of film out there, and we'll take a closer look at it," Belichick said . "A lot of guys out there, we can evaluate all of them."
The reluctance of Belichick to condemn the poor play of Gio Lopez was not only admirable, but it leaves us wondering where the offense is headed going forward if Lopez is healthy after the bye week.
A reporter followed the previous question with an insightful question to coach Belichick on if he thought Lopez was doing anything that was moving the offense forward at all. Like the previous question, Belichick shifted the answer.
"We've scored points the last two weeks. We had trouble doing it today. … Look, football is a sport with 11 guys out there. I'm not talking about one guy," Belichick said. "It's the 11 guys who have to operate efficiently, and times we've done that, and times we haven't. Today wasn't one of our better ones."
I don't know if Max Johnson is the long-term answer or if the team should start considering four-star freshman Bryce Baker as the next man up. All that is known officially is that Lopez is not doing the job he was brought in to do -- command the offense. Because of that, the team needs to move on from the South Alabama transfer.
