Broncos' backup RB 'chomping at the bit' for more playing time
RJ Harvey isn't the only Denver Broncos running back set to get more work following the J.K. Dobbins injury .
Jaleel McLaughlin , who has been RB4 this season, could jump up to RB2 duties while Dobbins is sidelined.
"[We] have experience in a guy like Jaleel, who is explosive and has been chomping at the bit [to play]," Broncos coach Sean Payton said after Wednesday's practice.
McLaughlin (5-7, 187 pounds) originally signed with Denver as an undrafted free agent out of Youngstown State in 2023. He totaled 1,142 yards from scrimmage and scored six touchdowns through his first two seasons in the NFL before being demoted to RB4 this offseason.
Payton picked Tyler Badie over McLaughlin for the RB3 role due in large part to Badie's ability as a pass blocker. However, with Dobbins sidelined and Harvey the new starter, Badie seems likely to remain RB3 with McLaughlin getting change-of-pace work behind Harvey.
Before the Dobbins injury, Denver's top three running backs were averaging 16.4, 7.5 and 1.3 touches per game, respectively. It wouldn't be surprising to see a similar rotation going forward with Harvey, McLaughlin and Badie getting reps in that order.
