Former Denver Broncos cornerback Tremon Smith is leaving the team to return to the Houston Texans , according to a report from KPRC-TV's Aaron Wilson . Smith will sign a two-year, $7.5 million deal with Houston.
Smith (6-0, 190 pounds) entered the league as a sixth-round draft pick out of Central Arkansas with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. After two years in KC, he went on to have stints with four other NFL teams before landing with the Broncos in 2023.
Smith, 28, is a cornerback on the roster, but the Broncos employed him as a special teams ace. He's played just 20 snaps on defense over the last two seasons compared to 778 snaps on special teams. Smith arguably ranks among the NFL's top "gunners."
In addition to covering kicks, Smith is also a returner. He returned six kickoffs for 170 yards last season, averaging 28.3 yards per return. The veteran defensive back has 2,493 kickoff return yards in his career and one touchdown as a returner.
Smith has just two career starts on defense (and two career interceptions) to go along with 62 tackles, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
